Daniel Craig is to open the 2012 Olympic Games ceremony

Post by Blowfeld »

Was David Tennant too busy?

Daniel Craig is to open the 2012 Olympic Games ceremony after a personal invitation from The Queen.

She asked him into Buckingham Palace to film spectacular scenes as 007 for London's sporting extravaganza.

In the film, he arrives by Royal Appointment to be told his latest mission is to launch the Games.

Her Majesty may even make a cameo appearance but the Palace is keeping details a secret.

A billion people watching on TV around the world will see Bond getting his instructions before he is taken by helicopter to parachute into the Olympic stadium in Stratford, East London.

Daniel, 44, and a film crew headed by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle were given unprecedented access to The Queen's private rooms on Tuesday.

They also shot helicopter and parachuting scenes.

Meeting ... The Queen ushers Bond into the Palace and over tea tells him: 'One would like you to open the Olympics'

Danny, creative director of the opening ceremony, has chosen to make MI6 agent Bond a key part of the spectacle which will kick-start the Olympics.

The Queen, who is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this year, had to personally sanction the move — which will give a glimpse inside the famous landmark.

A source on set said: "It's a huge coup for BBC producers and Danny to be allowed into the Palace and have the Queen involved.

"They wanted the most iconic British film character inside the building most associated with London and with the monarch — and they got it.

Mission ... 'Now then, 007', says M. 'Head to the Palace. HM has a job for you. Get it right or you're for the high jump'

"It will be a magical scene for all watching at home and inside the stadium on July 27.

"Working out the logistics of filming has taken months and hasn't been easy — but it will be worth it in the end."

Crew members were given strict instructions not to tell any members of the public what they were filming. Cameras and mobiles were banned on the set. The film — to be fed into the opening ceremony — was given the name "The Arrival".

Tower Bridge
Getaway ... Bond calmly finishes his Earl Grey and bids The Queen goodbye before scrambling aboard a waiting chopper

Julia McKenzie, who played Miss Marple in the ITV show, was also involved in the shoot.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of British Bond movies.

A Palace spokesman said: "Buckingham Palace is involved in a number of filming projects during this special Jubilee year and we would not go into details of any particular project until nearer the time of transmission."

Dropping in ... 007 parachutes into the stadium with seconds to spare. He tells the stunned crowd: 'The name's Bond, Games Bond'

Yesterday one of the Queen's granddaughters, Princess Beatrice, 23, was among 5,000 runners who completed a five-mile lap of the Olympic Park.

She crossed the finish line in the Olympic stadium in front of an invited crowd of 12,000 — then gave medals to winners in the event organised by the National Lottery.

THE Sun's Royal Editor Duncan Larcombe says: "The Queen is determined to make sure 2012 is unforgettable.

"By inviting James Bond into her home for this film, Her Majesty has shown she wants to be at the heart of the celebrations.

"Once again it's a refreshing sign of her sense of humour and willingness to step outside tedious protocol.

"She may be turning 86 this month but the monarch clearly still loves a party. And she retains that sixth sense of all that puts the Great into Great Britain."
The name's Bond, Games Bond

It's everywhere Sports news, movie news, general news. One of the greatest Punks ever because its gone viral in hours, if it's real then its a damned shame what the Olympics have fallen to, advertising a movie. It like the opening of SNL not a world wide celebration of the sporting spirit.

If this is real then I want Katniss Everdeen to open the Olympics when we get it, welcome to the 74th Hunger Games!

I think it shows the depths to which journalism has sunk. Because of the pressure to be first with a story, nobody bothers to fact-check anything any more.

Or maybe the story is true. After all, David Arnold is the musical director. The ultimate source does seem to be The Sun, though, so I dunno.

Man its weird, USA today has the story. Although underneath the Bond story they have a link to another story "Prostitutes being cleared from Olympic areas" consider the topic of Bond opening the Olympics it is appropriate .

Looking at the Bond fans sites they all think it is a hoax of some sort, although the Daily Mail has it some scenes for the movie were shot at the palace not the Queen begs Bond to jump out over stadium to open the games. :?

So with the Bond fansites it's hoax with maybe a touch of truth about the filming there, movie fansites, sport fansites its "OMG! Bond opening the Olympics!" IMO it is in poor taste if Sean Connery were doing it.

So the truth I think is what the Bond fansite including us are going wiht, a hell of lot of people got punked because of what Kris said. But if they did use Bond, I looked it up 3.5 billion watch the games, maybe 80 million watch the movies. There would be a hell of a lot to people watching tv going who the F' is this guy.

I just don't know what is happening with this story some places are reporting this as 'some thought it was a hoax but its not', other are saying nobody has confirmed this yet.
Soooo many jumped on the Sun's story it is hard to tell if any independent sources have confirmed anything. Honestly beyond anything about Daniel this if true is a very bad idea, sullies our turn to make an impression. For a Super Bowl half time show or MTV movie awards this might be appropriate, for a serious prestigious event this kind of stunt is cray, why not get Mr Bean? On the other hand while 007 is British icon, it is a movie series made essentially by Americans. Sure Barbara did a Madonna conversion, however the Bond series is not like the Doctor Who series which was conceived of and maintained by and for Britons since 1963. And we've had fewer interruptions in Doctor Who over the same time frame. (Alright maybe I fudging this one a little still it is pretty close)

Well it is official (mostly) and it is a disgrace. Poor use of the Queen, 007, and the Olympics. All to sell a few tickets more. I'd expect this of the Americans not the people who invented the BBC.

Just to be clear it is the character not Daniel being knighted, which I don't think Fleming would be happy with either.
Bond 'to be knighted by Queen' for Olympics
As an MI6 agent with a license to kill, he repeatedly risked his life on Her Majesty’s service.
[spoil]And now it appears that James Bond, Britain’s best-loved spy, is to be rewarded for his dedication to duty with a knighthood bestowed by the Queen.

Daniel Craig, the 007 actor, is reported to have received the ceremonial tap on the shoulder at Buckingham Palace in scenes to be screened during the opening ceremony at the Olympic Games.

The Queen is said to have gamely agreed to take part in the action and makes a cameo appearance in the film, which will be beamed around the world.

Both Danny Boyle, artistic director of the ceremony, Craig and Judi Dench, who plays M, the head of MI6, have been filming scenes at the Palace in recent weeks.

“Daniel Craig was here in black tie one morning in early April,” a source told the Evening Standard.

“Judi Dench was also here, and the talk of the Palace was that Bond was going to be knighted that morning.”

It has previously been suggested that as part of the film, Bond arrives at the Palace by Royal Appointment to be told by the Queen that his latest mission is to open the Games.

He will then be taken by helicopter to parachute into the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, East London, it was claimed.

Andrew Lycett, biographer of Bond author Ian Fleming, said a knighthood for the secret agent was long overdue.

“Bond did sterling work for Queen and country and deserves a gong,” he said.

“The first Bond book Casino Royale came out in 1953, Coronation Year, so the Queen has something to celebrate.

"James Bond receives an obituary in The Times in You Only Live Twice, in which he is described as Commander James Bond CMG. Reports of his death later prove to be an exaggeration and he is brought back to life for later instalments.”

However, details of the opening ceremony are being kept as secret as Bond’s many missions.

A spokesman for the Queen said: “Buckingham Palace is involved in a number of filming projects during this special Jubilee year and we would not go into details of a specific project until a nearer the time of transmission.”

An Olympics spokesman said: “We don't comment on speculation – and there are all sorts of things flying around.”[/spoil]

Living on the U.S. side of "the pond," my knowledge of the process for being knighted in very limited. But it seems to me from anecdotal evidence, that British entertainment figures generally aren't knighted until they're in their 70s or 80s. The three top examples I can think of are Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Paul McCartney. (Is Michael Caine also knighted?) And there have been some deserving U.K. entertainment figures (John Barry comes to mind) who never got a knighthood.

Meanwhile, today on Facebook, I saw two people -- each on separate sides of the Atlantic -- posting how wonderful it is that Daniel Craig is being knighted. Yes, they are convinced Craig, 44, is getting the knighthood.

I believe is ture this because McDonalds the least healthy fast food you can buy is the official food of the olympics, why because the olympics cost a lot to make and desperate needs money McDonalds wrote the check first, I'm sure the Bond people wrote a check too probably using the beer money. Alittel disappointed the Brits were the first to sell on this larg a scale. It almost as if MGW and BB are behind the olympics

This is going to be a Darker Olympics, showing the inner struggle between the two sides of the athletes.
But keeping all the elements the fans have come to expect, with lots more humor. :P

Craig opening the olympics, but he hates guns  , wonder how many times he'll jump if he's watching events like hurdles, running etc and they'll put him up on a high seat (doesn't he hate heights as well  ).

In all honesty why have craig open the olympics, surely Roger Moore, Connery or someone deserving should, not someone who's not really known that well who pretty much hates the public getting in his face, I don't want to see some morose lemon opening up something that should be great.
