Whats the bet?

Is it BO of QOS to surpass CR!!

Could be close call if QOS tails off badly, but US start was superb, plus there are decent returns expected
from Bond friendly Australia and Spain, plus film still to open in S.Africa and finally Japan.

In foreign markets the admission ticket increases have somewhat been offset by the strong dollar, which has robbed the film of even bigger returns.

Mind you little Switzerland is doing remarkably well!!!

BJ was very confident this would fail in the US, and would do nowhere near the opening weekend of TBU. Already he has been proved wrong. He also said this wouldn't do as well as CR at the BO. We'll see.

This is deja vu all over again. Are you ready for humble pie just yet, bj.... :P

Several people I talked to at the movie theater today had seen it more than once, and were raving about it, though the two kids sitting behind me when I saw it today had a running conversation going since I think they didn't understand a lot of what was going on(I heard the adults who were with them "shush"-ing them multiple times. )

Three times? Did you need that many screenings to understand the film? Perhaps Eon planned this like releasing a new computer program with deliberate bugs in it so you will be forced to buy more software? http://www.ew.com/article/0,,20240780,00.html B- rating yet a money maker? My niece saw it the other day and said she had trouble understanding it.I told her that a lot of people have seen it more than once to get things clarified and that she should see it more than once.I saw it twice and there were things that I noticed on the second viewing, like the fact that Elvis wears a wig :P)

$70 million opening weekend in the US
$322 million worldwide and counting...quickly.
Quantum Of Solace is doing the business.
I was lucky enough to see an advance screening of it last night. (Review to follow later)
But no surprises here. I loved it. Daniel Craig is James Bond. He's certainly giving Connery an honest run for his money.
After seeing the finishes film I really am wondering if some of these so called critics saw the same film as me or simply need to pull their heads out of their arses.
I'm not going to call it the best Bond film ever. I'd say it's an equal to CR at the moment. And I realise that most of the members here will hate it. Mostly because of Craig...or a dislike of the current direction of the series....or a hatred of EON...or none of the above...or that the movie didn't make as much as Madagascar 2 on its fourth weekend and is thus a failure even though it's had the biggest opening for a Bond movie, and bettered TBU!
Quantum Of Solace is a worthy Bond film, and an excellent entry after 21 films.
The only bad thing I would say. That song never gets any better.

Indeed. It beat Madagascar 2 handily(as an aside..several people in line to get tickets the second time I saw QOS were going to see Madagascar 2 and I was trying to talk them into seeing QOS instead! )

I can't wait to read it

Agreed about the reviewers being a bit harsh and about them seeing the same movie as you

TBM had it's earnings readjusted to $67.5 million in the USA, with a significant drop off Sunday as well. It did not beat TBU's opening and factoring in inflation, was not near topping it. We now await weekend two in the USA to see if this nonsense will last. Do you really believe the UK will do another $40 million just to tie CR, even with the increased screenings per day?

Glad you found the film better than you had expected!!

I mean i know some people who won't see the film just because of the reviews, but while there may be valid points,
it shouldn't stop people from seeing a film and making up thier own mind.

We all look at things in many a varied way.

As you say in your review, its nothing special, but good enough!

The only thing is i personally always want the Bonds to be great........but thats life!! :D

Here's a question: Did anyone go "What's Philip Seymour Hoffman doing in a Bond film?" when they saw Beam(from the CIA).Obviously, it wasn't Hoffman but the guy has a similar look!

Its not the first time a Bond films opening in the US has been over estimated........1999's TWINE had an estimated opening of $37+ mil, which eventually came down to $35+ (if i remember off hand correctly).
Sundays seem to be always the big drop off days for action films for some reason.
The INT total has also been rounded down by a small margin as well.

Mind you, $3 mil over estimate in US is quite a bit, maybe everyone stayed at home for tea on Sunday afternoon.

Overall though its interesting to note that in comparison to TBU, QOS's theatre averages were still higher, and the film played in some 200 less cinemas, so it looks like the 2 films were pretty even.....taking all things into account.

The weekdays receipts for QOS in the US will be interesting, as this will provide us with how the film is being received by word of mouth.
This coming weekend, with 2 big wide releases against it..........i can see QOS dropping quite a lot, probably down 50% or more.........a total of $30-35 max would be my guess.
Thanksgiving weekend should help the film do strong business in its 3rd weekend, but after that we enter early December,
and i expect the films business to dwindle rapidly (the first 2-3 weeks of December is the kiss of death to most films at the BO).

From your point of view 'BJ'........i hear that Bond 23 will be back under the control of MGM, do you think that will have any
major impact on the way the Bond franchise is steered?

btw: we are all waiting for you to see your review of the film, if you can bring yourself to seeing it.............but i think you may need to mark it out of 100 not 10....to get a low enough figure.

Yes, the guy with the moustache and glasses 8)

I liked the Palio chase(believe it or not!) and I really liked the Perla De Las Dunas. That place was off.the.hook.

The worst? the rape scene, and Bond throwing Mathis' body into a dumpster.

BTW I want a high-tech set up like MI6 has in their offices. That was awesome. I'll be interested to see if it's in the next movie, or if they remodel again :P

Lots of stuff happened lately for Bond, so I thought I'd make a guest visit and put down my word for folks interested in my thoughts on QOS.

SUPERB MISTER BOND, SUPERRRB! Nothing gigantically spectacular, but a solid Bond flick nevertheless. Those negative reviews are just hyperbole BS. "No Q! No Moneypenny! Wah Wah Wah!" give me a break. If Dr. No or From Russia with Love were released today there'd be the same complaints. Critics can be so fickle! So yeah, I enjoyed it. Much more than I thought given the negativity. But hey that's just my opinion.

Favorite Bits: Bond at the opera house doing some bit of spying, then disrupting the meeting so he can see them scatter about and take photos. Very Bondian! Loved the s**t out of it! And the bit with Bond and Greene seeing eachother for the first time face to face is great. The opening is fantastic. Love how it builds up with the lake view intercutting with parts of the Astin Martin speeding by and the bad guys loading up their weapons.

Least favorite: Hmm, can't say. I really didn't have much problem with this flick, kind of like how I don't have a problem with most of my top 10 (QOS ranks between 6-8). So while not the best Bond flick, it's a solid entry for me and I look forward to the next film.

So I give it an 8/10 overall.

And onto the box office: Looks like Craig proved his worth. QOS's opening was touted by the likes of BJ to be the official reaction of CR by the public. However, it made a bigger opening than CR, proving that audiences loved the last film and Craig in the role, confirming all the raving reviews and such. Will it drop? Maybe. However even if it doesn't go on to be as successful as CR, the producers will take note that Craig's first film was a success and keeping him will be the right thing to do while also taking note of the criticisms of QOS to work on the next film to appeal to more audiences. Looks like Craig is here to stay!

Until then, I'll see you all at another time (a big Bond event occurring), another place (MI6/Alternative007). :)

If BJ ever sees QOS(or if he has already) I'll be interested to see what he thinks of it.

As for whether QOS will be tops at the box office: Twilight comes out next weekend and I'm sure there will be lots of emo goth tweens going to see it.But from the looks of it it's nowhere near as good as QOS(I don't get the appeal of Twilight,TBH)

I think it has a good chance of taking QOS down the top spot, but in the long run, no. I can't see that flick making 300 worldwide, let alone 200. Shocking to see you liked QOS (to an extent of course!) I wonder how BJ took that news.
