Goldfrapp were dropped from recording a James Bond theme for the film 'Casino Royale' because they weren't macho enough.
The 'Rocket' hitmakers - made up of singer Alison Goldfrapp and producer Will Gregory - said they were hoping to record the theme song for 'Casino Royale', but the British spy movie franchise was being rebranded with Daniel Craig drafted in as a colder, harder lead character than previously portrayed and they makers wanted the theme to reflect this with a male vocalist.
Will explained they had been in talks with David Arnold, who supervises the film series' soundtracks.
He said: "We were talking - we're friends with David Arnold, so we do talk to him. He's a really nice guy and we like what he does.
"What I understand is that there was talk about us doing 'Casino Royale' and then because they were changing to Daniel Craig, and they wanted to kind of reinforce whatever his character was, as he was the new Bond, they wanted a male artist to do the song- so we didn't. So that is, in a nutshell, what happened."
The song for which eventually soundtracked the film was former Audioslave singer Chris Cornell's 'You Know My Name'.
The group also admitted they hadn't started work on a song for the film and don't tend to keep spare material between writing albums.
Will added: "We write songs that we don't like enough to put on the record, and it tends to be the case that they'll go in a bottom drawer. And the the thing is, occasionally when we start a new album or at some point we'll open the drawer and have a look. And then we always think, 'you know what, we put it in here for a reason: it's not very good'. So there has never been a 'spare' song, really."

What a pity! A very bad decision IMHO. Cornell was awful. Goldfrapp would have created an inspired soon to be classic song.

Interesting that they were close(ish)to doing the CR theme. I like Cornell's theme, but I think Goldfrapp would have done a good job. Their name has been suggested in connection with the last few Bond films.
Of all the bands/artists whose names come up in conversation, Goldfrapp are the most palatable suggestion.

Two s**t theme songs in a row, the last one so bad someone should be in prison, and they turn down Goldfrapp? Numbskulls.

It was a wasted opportunity for EON not to use Goldfrapp.
I'm almost afraid of who they might choose to do the theme for Bond 23.

The last two songs were appalling. The Geneva Convention moved to ban them and the CIA say that if they did used them, not admitting they do, it would not be torture because America does not torture. While at the movies I myself felt tortured in my seat and was willing to confess to anything before the credits were over!
Once upon a time the music used was enjoyable even if the performer wasn't a favorite. Now they are taking performers I usually like and turning out acoustic water boarding!

"Acoustic waterboarding" is the perfect way to describe the last few Bond themes!

More's the pity. I like Arnold's themes much better than the ones he didn't write. And yes, that includes You Know My Name. Sorry, but on that occasion, I think EON was right - a rock song with a male vocalist better suited the tone of CR than a more ballady type song would have done. But I agree that DAD and AWTD sucked balls - they should have used the Shirley Bassey song that Arnold and Black wrote for QoS. Does anyone know of any rejected themes for DAD?katied wrote:If I were David Arnold I would have been trying to change EON's mind about Goldfrapp(because you know good and well that decision wasn't up to Arnold! )

I don't know if they needed a mail voice for that one. I think they would have been served by a decent song and not necessarily a monster ballade by washed up rocker. maybe his god awful vocals matched the tone of the movie, I don't know.

I don't get the hate for Arnold. I know in some fan circles *anyone* would be preferable to him. I don't understand it, though.

I'm interested whether you still think Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" is awful. Did it grow on you? I dunno, it is one of my favourite Bond Themes and I consider myself something of an aficionado...JackWade CIA wrote: Sat Mar 13, 2010 6:45 pm What a pity! A very bad decision IMHO. Welcome to the forum, Vazool. May I ask how you found us?
