Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I am providing a quote from the latest article from Variety Re: NTTD. The lead got buried at the end but this will send chills thru Eon and Babz. It seems Amazon is sending signals to Babz that they're not going to green light big budget vanity Bond projects for Babz. This prob came right from Amazon HQ IMHO. Variety is the trade paper for corrupt Hollywood and thats where they would send this message.
Here is the quote - "James Bond may need to economize with 25 popular movies across six decades, Bond has cemented its place as a film franchise with few rivals. The property was a cornerstone of Amazon’s $8.45 billion acquisition of MGM, the company that backs Bond. (Universal Pictures distributes Bond internationally.) That means although Craig has retired his black tux and signature martini, it’ll hardly be the last that audiences see of the coveted spy series. Though no upcoming projects have been announced, the Bond overlords are likely taking a hard look at how much money they will pump into the next 007 outing — whether on the big or small screen. For “No Time to Die,” $56 million to start is somewhat disappointing because it carries an enormous budget and will need to gross at least $800 million globally to get out of the red (probably closer to $900 million). Box office experts predict the film will complete its domestic run with approximately $150 million, considerably short of its franchise predecessors, 2012’s “Skyfall” ($300 million) and 2015’s “Spectre” ($200 million). In that case, “No Time to Die” will need to generate significant coinage at international box office, where it’s already amassed a strong $145 million. It has yet to open in China (set for Oct. 29), which is a popular market for Bond. “No Time to Die” has grossed $313 million to date and may struggle to break even, at least in its theatrical run. “I don’t know that a future Bond property will have the same unique budgetary stressors this film had,” says Dergarabedian, referring to the tens of millions the studio had to spend delaying the movie due to the pandemic. “It takes a lot to offset those kind of costs. But audiences expect a certain level of production value from James Bond.”
It’s true that Bond has become synonymous with extravagance, but there should be ways to reduce costs — and still deliver on style — to assure an easier path to profitability. May we recommend leasing the Aston Martin?" Source - https://variety.com/2021/film/news/no-t ... 235085705/

Interesting, those industry papers never publish unless the messaging is approved
Talk about what format the next bond appearance will be ought to be interesting
Other than China being a huge hope for this movie other places are saying China is restively small between $50 & 100 million, 100 million would be huge for them in China

This is quite appropriate, I was mulling a rant in which I argue while he is quite popular and a long standing institution, Bond is not a billion dollar property, I guess Amazon agree. I'll have to do that one next after I finish NTTD.

DB, I see you are familiar with Jimmy "superfly" Snuka so you must be a wrestling fan as well as a Bond critic. Keep it going.

Made an edit and corrected my faux-pas, gave you credit too!
Tell you the truth BJ I haven't watched wrestling since I was a kid and it used to come on after Saturday morning cartoons, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka was one of the names to stand out to me along with "Hacksaw" Jim Duggen, HOOOOO!

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I wanted to bring up the topic of uninspired marketing for the Craig era that Benny and I were discussing in the fan art thread, since this is a more appropriate place for it. For all the promise of Craig's era being a bold and better direction for Bond, the marketing certainly doesn't emphasize this. Just look up some of the fan poster artworks and compare them to the official ones to see what I mean. It make you wonder if Babs and the rest of the Tiny Toon crew truly care about their new direction of the Bond films?
The entire Craig era has been such a confusing and contradicting mess. The reboot was apparently made because of Bond parodies like Austin Powers, and yet, Craig's last two films have borrowed plot points from Austin Powers and the 1967 Casino Royale. So are they suddenly embracing Bond parodies now? There has been bashing of the classic Bond films throughout this era, but yet they keep on making references and piggybacking on the classic films. Make up your minds and decide on either the classic or the new direction, because mixing the two doesn't seem to work that well, in my opinion.
Good job on the third part of your No Time To Die rant, Benny. You are only up to the title sequence, and I'm starting to debate on whether I should even bother going through the pain of watching this crap for free whenever it gets posted online.

Our discussion on the posters got me thinking about a poster competition from March of 2020, one which promised the winner use of their poster in the film's promotion, to date no official winner has been announced.

I suppose they didn't like the fact each and every one blew their official works out of the water!
As you say going back to the beginning of the Craig era the posters are dull, CR has Craig standing in an unkempt tux, QOS has Craig standing on some sand, oh, but he's holding a machine gun! SF has Craig standing in a gunbarrel. SP is Craig standing in a white jacket. Now NTTD is variably Craig standing in a tux or in a blue sweater/jumper. It's been basically 15 years of Craig just standing around!

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I just wanted to add to the recent comments , but what alarms me is bond is dead , and I dont care, so ruined is the James Bond by the DC era . I cant bring myself to watch the DC bonds, Quantum was when I gave up. Which saddens me it really does. I only have the vagest notion of the plots to the last three films ( mainly due to this website) . I start to read DBs great rants , then plot details come out , and I think, actually do I want to know this? No, so I stop and try to skim past plot details ( sorry DB!). I'm not saying all the previous Bond films were great , they weren't , VtaK and DaD for a start. But at least they had Bond in them!

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I understand Derek, watching Bond get deconstructed isn't easy, whether it be actually watching the film or even reading it through the vail of my silly musings, whatever form the "knife" takes it still cuts. In fact I'd say you're probably better off to avoid it and leave your memories unspoiled. For those who have already been spoiled, I'll be here to try and put a juvenile spin on it.
I agree, not all of the first 20 films were masterpieces, but as you say at least they're "Bond" films!

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I have not been to see a Bond film in person since 2002. I always saw the films twice. Bezos owns MGM now and he loves Star Trek and Star Wars. Perhaps he will use his ownership influence and give the world a space oriented plot for the next Bond film. Broccoli most likely NEVER gave a thought to killing off Bond and what obstacles that causes for the next film. In her sick mind, let ALL the future films do less box office than Cr-egg so she can crow that 'nobody did it better' than her love trinket.

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
I remember my first Cinema Bond film, Roger in Octopussy. Watched it in a small cinema in Padstow on holiday with my brother and dad. I remember Dalton's first film, watching it with friends at Wycombe 6 on its opening night at somthing silly like 11.30pm as it was the very first showing. From 1983 to 2006 I didnt miss a Bond on opening weekend. Oh well.
The light at the end of the tunnel was DC would one day go. But , looking around at what's happening now with films like Last Jedi and Ghostbusters, I'm realising that film producers arent interested in respecting source material anymore . The source material is just a cash cow name to get people in the door so they don't have to take a risk with inventing new original films and characters. So even with DC gone, Bond really wont be back for sometime to come.
And when it comes to lack of originality dont get me started on the paycheck vanity project that is Creakyana Jones. If Ford still wants to pay an action style hero at 80, he should take leaf out of Clint's book and watch Gran Torino .

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
Yeah Derek, I'm afraid it's only going to get worse before it gets better. Baz is not a trend setter, she's a good 4-5 years behind the times and that's with EON writing the movies as they film! You'd think, though a backward way to work, it would at least make the process nimble enough to ebb and flow. No, she had to copy Bourne though those films were a half decade old, then The Dark Knight 4 years too late and now Marvel after that train pulled into the station. So barring any miraculous epiphany at EON productions, we're doomed with more of the same for the near future.

I haven't seen the film, but from the stills you posted, it looks like the "centurion" is meant to be Britannia, an artistic personification of Britain the way Uncle Sam is for the USA.
I actually don't mind the theme song. In my ranking of Craig-era theme songs, it sits dead centre; below Chris Cornell and Adele, but above Sam Smith and Jack White/Alicia Keys.
