Re: Box office thread
No no thread this week do to the historic shutdown. I believe it’s overkill to some extent however i get why it was done.
Interestingly Vudu and other streaming services have movies in theaters up for rental and purchase
The latest Disney Pixar onward, Invisible man, the hunt, Emma
Nothing great really except onward is supposedly good. The others I couldn’t care less about

Re: Box office thread
Obviously there's not much box office news to report, but I have been going through The Numbers website and I have compiled a chart of all the Bond films (non-EON films in italics) ranked from the most to the least profitable. The number given is the return on investment (ROI); that is, a figure of 3.5 means that the film's worldwide box office was 3.5 times its production budget:
Dr No 59.6
Goldfinger 41.6
From Russia With Love 39.5
Live And Let Die 23.1
Diamonds Are Forever 16.1
Thunderball 15.7
The Man With The Golden Gun 13.9
The Spy Who Loved Me 13.2
You Only Live Twice 11.7
On Her Majesty's Secret Service 10.3
For Your Eyes Only 7.0
Moonraker 6.8
Octopussy 6.8
Goldeneye 5.9
Casino Royale (2006) 5.8
Skyfall 5.6
A View To A Kill 5.1
The Living Daylights 4.8
Never Say Never Again 4.4
Licence To Kill 3.7
Casino Royale (1967) 3.5
Tomorrow Never Dies 3.1
Die Another Day 3.0
SPECTRE 2.9
The World Is Not Enough 2.7
Quantum Of Solace 2.6
The Bonds ranked by bankability (average ROI per film):
Sean Connery (EON only) 44.6
Sean Connery (including NSNA) 40.7
Roger Moore 17.6
George Lazenby 10.3
Timothy Dalton 4.3
Daniel Craig 4.2
Pierce Brosnan 3.7
Average ROI (all films): 12.2
Average ROI (EON films): 12.9
Of the 3 Bond films to not meet the magic 3.0 ROI threshold, one was a Brosnan film and two were Craigs. Sadly, Brozza's average still falls below Craig's, though Craig does have the dubious distinction of having made the least profitable Bond film of all time.

Re: Box office thread
I’m not sure how accurate those numbers are.
We know LTK was in the red until GE revived the series, on paper eon has always said a bond movie always makes money, the reality is different because of high P&A of the recent movies since the late 90s
For brosnan bonds it was DVD that boosted them to huge profitability, DAD had the head of MGM bragging it was the most profitable bond in the history of their collaboration with eon,
I think CR was supposed to have made $100 million profit after its run which cost as much as dad. I couldn’t see what they have cost but numbers has $209 million from dvd sales
I haven’t thought about it in a long time, I need to look at what they have vs the old numbers we had on actual returns on the movie budge.

Re: Box office thread
Ah the have the budget for Cr as $102 million which was pounds not dollars, that was part of the early spin they had cut the budget to make the movies more profitable but used GPB to talk about cost. It actually was within a few million of DADs budget

Re: Box office thread
Obviously I'm only as good as my sources. If The Numbers says that a film made back x times its production budget, I have no way to independently verify that figure. But I don't think LTK lost money, though it underperformed by Bond standards.
And yes, the figures are for theatrical release only. Most films make the bulk of their revenue through home media (and, more recently, streaming on mobile devices).

Re: Box office thread
Well about the time of CR there was memos from accountants the were released/leaked the foot notes version was the backers and studio were not going to make another dalton movie, they wanted pierce brosnan. Lead reason for the casting change LTK finished in the red, I think the number we had reflected it as well, actual gross from ticket sales vs cost . I think they followed up with it wasn’t until GE hit vhs and dvd that the renewed interest for bond help LTK cross the line in to profit.
But most of Craig and brosnan could finish in the red but make the profit on home video, mostly because of bloated budgets after GE
The numbers is pretty good but they do go back to fix erroneous data, that CR budget is from one story maybe two in 2006

Re: Box office thread
More statistics, this time, the average profitability of those directors who have done more than one Bond film:
Terence Young 38.3
Guy Hamilton 23.7
Lewis Gilbert 10.6
Martin Campbell 5.7
John Glen 5.5
Sam Mendes 4.3
Apart from Campbell and Glen being transposed, the numerical order is the same as the chronological order of first film.

Maybe I should post what streaming ranks are, Scoob! Was another test of the digital market, trolls did so well theater owners are boycotting universal who might find out they don’t need theaters after all
I need to see what Scoob! we didn’t buy it because we weren’t that interested and our nieces and nephews didn’t seem to care either

I still can’t figure out what Scoob! Did in sales. The say universal isn’t talking about troll but they did and it shook the industry.
Maybe it’s the status quo right now not to talk about digital sales over theatrical releases

Re: Box office thread
The streaming services have always been cagey about discussing viewing figures. This seems like an extension of that.Omega wrote:I still can’t figure out what Scoob! Did in sales. The say universal isn’t talking about troll but they did and it shook the industry.

True. I’m trying to figure out what DEG is and how they get their info. Numbers uses them, but the website looks thrown together using random stock photos.

I hadn't looked at any box office sites for a while, but...the #1 movie made less than $1 million?

Box office thread
Amc which we have the movie membership has sent out an email indicating they will reopen some of the theaters in the next week aiming for 2/3 open by September 3rd,
I don’t think it’s going to happen , at least not near us. We stopped by the amc we used to go to, it’s not really near us but it’s close enough we take the nieces and nephews to it, we parked in their parking lot to eat the fast food we picked up. Its way over grown with weeds and a little bit of trash. Does not look like it’s even starting to think about opening.
Honestly I’m not sure theaters come all the way back from this.

Re: Box office thread
Bo is still dead. Honestly I’d rather strait to digital release for most movies.
Dune, and marvel movies I’d like to see on the big screen. Nolan movies tend to have crappy soundtracks, like interstellar and Dunkirk. It sounded like crap theaters fixed in later shows if but only really sounded good on home video

Re: Box office thread
Tenet has just made back its $200 million production budget worldwide. Hard to see it turning a profit on its theatrical release. The studio had better hope that it does boffo BO (as they say in Variety) on home media.

It won’t see $300
They need $450-500 to break even, WB stoped releasing date about the specific bo data. Bo is still dead and I honestly don’t know what outside a major motion picture event will start to bring back people in the number they used to go to the movies in.
I’ve gotten to like digital release instead of going to the movie.

Re: Box office thread
Looking over the movie news apparently $10 million is the new standard for success.
Young audiences and young families seem to be willing to go to family friendly movies. People in the industry want to spin it as success I’m not so sure it’s that different from Tenet. I think the eagerness to push movie theaters is blinding some to what the normal facts are Hollywood can’t make money with these returns and theater owners can’t stay open in them either.
I like the theater experience but the industry was bloated and over charged for the experience, I’m curious if there is a getting back to normal or if the new normal is something different than before.
