Maybe not now, but he used to be. He was pretty much the last of the old-style movie stars who could get people into cinemas just by having his name on the posters. Movies don't really work like that any more, though. People go to see the latest Marvel or Disney or Star Wars film, rather than the latest Will Smith (or whoever) film.

It doesn't help that Gemini Man has been getting stinking reviews, with most of the venom being reserved for the 100fps process used to film it. Depending on which review you read, it makes it look like either a soap opera, a sitcom, or a 1980s kids TV show.

Weekend Box Office Estimates
1. Joker - $55 million
2. The Addams Family - $30.29 million
3. Gemini Man - $20.5 million
Get the full chart here: https://imdb.to/2MB6dRf

Only a 42.8% drop for Joker, which is quite rare these days. Gemini Man didn't even meet its mediocre projections.

That’s not bad at all. Justice league I think was 56%, most comic book movies are in that range. Wow, joker got better legs than I thought

At the current rate, it should break $200 million domestically and $550 million worldwide in the next day or two.

Interesting WB @ bomojo has $55 million as jokers cost.
Apparently it’s more like $70 million with $120 for p&r , $190 all in. About wonder woman and Aquaman range.
So once they cross $600 not counting China they are in profit , it’s @ $543 right now probably not going to be released in China ?

It's already in profit, the rule of thumb is three times the production budget, as p&d is usually around twice the production costs. So anything over $190 million is profit.

Sorry I was in a hurry. If total cost are $190-200 million then they broke even $400-500 million, so it’s a little better than I first said. I’m surprised WB is floating the $55 million figure when $70 is correct, I think they were prepared for the movie to flop and claim it was not a big loss. Unlike justice league .

But I think this model of business shows the way forward for Hollywood, smaller investments instead of whole hog bloated production over $200 million.

I hate to think how much the current bond movie costs, last few were over $400 million with P&A , when they are that big they have to make a billion to break even.

Yes, it's more common for studios to inflate their budgets, in order to cheat those entitled to a share of the profits. Unless $55 million is the true figure and $70 million the official one.

Just had a horrible thought about Joker's success. It's probably too late for NTTD, which is mostly in the can, but will it cause Babs to double down on the "washed-up alcoholic human dumpster fire" angle for Bond 26?

Joker could become the biggest non-Disney movie of the year, with only Sony's new Jumanji movie posing any challenge: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmende ... 8824dc3a26

It also could best Deadpool for most profitable comic book movie . Not sure lightning will strike twice for Jumanji, it ended up being a perfect storm of disappointment in last Jedi and no competition because studios back off offering counter programming.

Disney has become the biggest name in Hollywood, unimaginable 20 years ago, they didn’t do it on their own they bought up properties proven to be capable of strong BO.
Before the current Disney era offering super hero movies of consistent quality was unthinkable, the dark knight trilogy was one of the first to start the trend, before this the audience would get two decent movies then the quality would fail on the third movie.
Part of the reason imho bond fans were eager to accept EON/Cubby were so essential for keeping 007 movies going. When Hollywood tried we get casino royal and never say never again.
Cubby had all kinds of Quality control issues but for the most part kept the movies a steady enjoyable experience. Unfortunately Babs and MGW we’re only capable of copying Cubby a few times before failing when babs went out on her own.

The golden era or serial tv and movies we have right now is kind of why I’m thinking the audience might be less willing to forgive babs hubris releasing one movie every five years about the most miserable man in the world

Joker just crossed $600 million worldwide. It should beat Justice League quite comfortably. I didn't realise that the highest-grossing DC film worldwide, unadjusted for inflation, is Aquaman. I didn't think it had done that well, let alone joined the billion-dollar club.

It was another Christmas break film that families went to. Aquaman stayed in the top 3 all of January. It was the sleeper DC hit

Interesting the leto guy who was joker in suicide squad, apparently tried to use his influence with Warner Bros. to keep the joker movie from being made. Thing was he didn’t have much influence the movie didn’t do well he was only in it for 10 minutes and apparently played all kinds of awful pranks on the cast and crew.
