Your rants are consistently the best thing on this forum, and often say what I'm thinking better than I could.

Thank you BJ, I'm sure Babz doesn't read them but I imagine some poor schmuck at EON has to.

Well, it's certainly better reading you rants than any of their recent scripts.Although I'd like to point out that Eastern Europe wasn't as firmly shut behind the iron curtain as many people seem to think. I remember my father telling me at one point he watched The Spy Who Loved Me in cinema way back in '77 or' 78 at most. But, that's not a major thing anyway.

That's my understanding too, forgive me if I'm mistake. I was under the impression that Tito's Yugoslavia while communist though being detached from the USSR gave them access to the west.

That's quite correct. But the whole of ex Y. is often reffered as "Eastern Europe" or more specifically "South-Eastern" Europe.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying V! I didn't mean to confuse the issue with my generalization.

Barbara Takes A Stand!

To be clear this essay is not intended to be an attack on women in general or feminists specifically though I imagine some will see it that way. No my intention is to rebuke the small cadre of individuals who wish to reshape the landscape of pop culture to conform with their very narrow definition of equality.

The “woke” militias of the Hollywood Illuminati have been beating the battle drums for a female Bond more and more recently. Even British Prime Minister Theresa May waded in to the fray to demand a lady Bond.

Bond must become a woman the marching cadence demands. Which is funny as wasn’t it this time last year Bond must be black and the year before didn’t he need to be gay and before that some other such special group. The fickle finger of activist’s wags erratically, just as Occupy Wall Street gave way to Black Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter gave way to #Metoo and #Timesup, so too has the aim shifted on who “needs” to be Bond. I suppose some day when we are contacted by extra-terrestrials Bond must be Martian because green lives matter. Or perhaps when the dead begin to walk among us Bond will need to become a zombie because they were people too!

One of the arguments in favor of “Jane Bond” is the fact that James Bond is terrible in his “misogynist” treatment of women. How would having a woman commit the same “repugnant” behaviors be any better? If Jane is a lesbian she will be doing exactly the same thing to women that male Bond does, but I suppose not having a penis somehow makes it better? If not a lesbian she’ll be treating men “poorly,” but I suppose that’s respectable because men “deserve” it?

Then again, who’s to say we haven’t already had a female Bond, as we all know gender is fluid and who are we to assume what gender any particular actor was identifying as while filming any given scene! After all, maybe Connery was identifying as non-binary during YOLT? Perhaps Dalton was queer in LTK and Craig did appear in drag for that Woman’s Day Bond tie in!

Well, I’m happy to say Barbara Broccoli has finally put all this nonsense to bed by coming out and unequivocally stating Bond will never be female! Obviously I have taken exception to many of her film making decisions particularly over the past decade. However she should be applauded as a self-stylized feminist for standing up to the politically correct lynch mobs, especially at this time when her feminist friends and the world’s media have gone mad with man hatred, some for legitimate reasons and some less so. For her to come right out and say what obviously needed to be said is groundbreaking and maybe, just maybe, we could be witnessing the inception of a return to form for the old franchise.

She is taking a side her Hollywood pals will be quick to criticize. Kind of surprising she even did it seeing as she likes the praise they give her for destroying Ian Fleming’s James Bond for the sins of her father actually blatantly making movies that fit the attitudes of the times

Today's feminism has gone so far I have started actively disliking it... as a woman. It's not about equality between the sexes now, it seems all those angry feminists are competing with each other who will scream "Rape!!" more times when a man accidentally touches their shoulder.Feminists today seem to hate men for their mere existance. Ironic it is then how they call any man a chauvinist. They are probably okay with gay men but a STRAIGHT one? God forbid.

Babs has a problem with any form of feminism and justifying her role in the bond franchise. Not that she should, it’s easy to explain attitudes change as the times change. But she wants to be a hero to the cause and for this reason she thinks the women’s day as was a good idea and all of the bs about bond being sexist since GE.

Brosnan Royale

After rereading Casino Royale recently I wondered what if Brosnan had been given Fleming’s final unfilmed property as his swan song, instead of the overly bloated Die Another day. Or at the very least had they put that property in their pocket and waited until Craig had established a few missions under his belt and made it his fourth film rather than the ridiculous SPECTRE. Had they done this and stayed truer to the existential conflict occurring in an older Bond’s head as written by Fleming it would have been remarkable.

You see contrary to EON’s press, Casino Royale was not an origin story, it was instead the first story in the series. The Bond of the novel was a veteran agent with many years of rough dangerous encounters behind him. It is his torture and near death experience at the hands of Le Chiffre that causes him to consider retirement rather than the syrupy love story depicted in film. Sure an infatuation with Vesper has some influence on the decision, but it is actually the damage to Bond’s personal ethos (not to mention his nether’s) that sends him running to the open and comforting arms of Miss Lynd, not as EON would have you believe a deep unrelenting passion for the woman herself.

Instead of forcing a “Bond begins” facet on to this story, they could have created a custom built vehicle to explore Bond’s origins and not have had to revisit them for four straight films! We’re supposed to believe a young freshly minted agent with a shiny new license to kill is already burnt out, fed up and anxious to leave his chosen profession? We’re never told why he wanted to become a 00, now suddenly he wants to leave and with just as much explanation at the film’s conclusion he’s ready to stay?

So I pose what if an older actor had been presented in the role, such as Brosnan in 2002/2004 or Craig at this point in his tenure? A war weary agent who finds his well-established moral code challenged, causing him to sulk off and lick his wounds, seeking consolation in the arms of the most recent willing woman, who in turn challenges that new found solace when her treachery comes to light.

They tried it with Skyfall, unfortunately that film representing only Craig’s second mission caused the concept to fall flat. After all in Casino, Craig had just been promoted, in Quantum which takes place just five minutes after Casino, he was cleaning up some unfinished business, now suddenly he’s old, creaky and spent? Had they put Craig though three separate and trying missions leading up to a Casino which fleshes out this angst explored by Fleming or even better had Brosnan done it before rebooting the franchise it would have been a much more impactful film.

I'll always remember one comment about CR that said "People behave like it found a cure for cancer, made our puppies immortal and payed off all our mortgages". Aside from being utterly overrated in every possible way it also doesn't make any sense with having a newbie agent who looks older than expierenced agent from Goldeneye.Craig's Bond just seems to hate his job from the get go, I have to wonder why he got into it in the first place. Oh right. Lazy writing, that is.

Boom!
DB dropped the mic!

The only Craig movie that critics say holds up is CR, to me CR is a massively flawed film because it was babs attempt at bond begins. And of course Craig is too old for a rookie agent then all the my armor is gone/ vesper soul mate crap. And acting like he never saw a suit before the double agent tramp gave him one. So many stupid things done to add “gritty realistic” crap to validate babs mistake and Sony’s investment, part monk part hit man, the lack of sense in supposed motivation of the poker game. Craig crashing a car because he was mistaken for a parking valet . The airport chase and of course many many first mission f’ups. Winning the bd5 in a poker game just to have a Hollywood pseudo origins moment.

The official talking point were that Craig was Fleming’s bond, who had nothing in common with Fleming’s bond, and CR was the best translation of bond novel to film ever except it wasn’t. I know a guy who at the time loved the movie, but was the first to admit it had little to do with the novel which made him anathema to the fanboy click of 2006-09.
