Box office thread

Post by Omega »

Looks like ready player one has a strong start but falters after opening day, some predictions were for $52-54 million opening. I’m not surprised it is a hit since people younger than us were talking about the book a few years ago.

Went to pacific rim 2 today, um, not a bad movie but not a worthy sequel either. Kind of pacific rim meets Enders game meets ID2.
The subtitle scenes were fine and appropriate, didn’t feel forced.
The story behind the production is legendary who produced the original was sold to a Chinese company and they pushed production ahead full speed, losing the chance to get back many of the original cast.
Honestly I think they bought the scripts for the Independence day sequels. Biggest problem I had is you can’t connect with any of the new cast they way you could with the original cast. Also the yager scenes felt much cheaper and unrealistic. Which is a strange thing to say but in the original there was a feeling of realism at least as far it relates to that world

Other people I know have said much the same thing, that it's fun in a B-movie way, but lacks the world-building and visual style of the original.

I've read the book of Ready Player One after my sister bought it for me for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

Saw Ready Player One yesterday. I doubt that it'll be regarded as a classic in years to come the way Jaws, Raiders, Close Encounters etc are today, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

we just got out of ready player one, I disagree some because I do think it’ll be a classic for kids today and maybe slightly older, may not Spielberg’s best but it hit all the right notes and will be rewatchable for a long long time. We both enjoyed it but then we were young kids at the tail end of the 80s and got a lot of the references

I was a teenager in the '80s, and I enjoyed the nostalgia aspect of it, though I think Spielberg was wise to tone it down a bit from the novel. Ernest Cline does have a tendency to get carried away, and you end up getting a 10-page laundry list of stuff he remembers, in place of a story.

American ticket sellers Fandango say the Russo Brothers-directed movie Avengers: Infinity War became the fastest-selling superhero movie within a 24-hour period, beating previous record holder Black Panther within just six hours.

Can't say I'm surprised, it's obviously going to be huge. Meanwhile, Ready Player One dropped a mere 40% in its second week, indicating strong word of mouth. It's almost reached $400 million worldwide, and has yet to open in Japan, where it should do well, given that Japan is videogame central.

I heard ready player one the book had more political flavor, I didn’t get that vibe from the movie, aside from the standard corporate bad guys

I wouldn't say the book was especially political either, except in the sense that everything is political.

Blade Runner 2049 may have disappointed at the cinema box office, but it has been a steady seller on home video: http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/after-lack ... home-video

now this is interesting, it does have an audience but not one that when out to see it. IMO in the next few years theater, digital and Home release are going to drop very close if not the same day just to capitalize on the positive press and ads leading up to theatrical release, and beat the speed of bad word of mouth.

But BR2049 had great word of mouth. A vocal minority said that they found it too slow and boring - I think they were people who weren't familiar with the original movie, and were expecting something more action-oriented - but most of the comments I heard from people who saw it before me were positive.

I was saying in general, right now Hollywood fears bad word of mouth and RT. Cutting out both might be tempting, for like Babs releasing anther polished turd
