Although it's back at the beginning with a Binder-esque look, it just seems like the filmmakers halfheartedly did it for the sake of shutting up the hardcore fans knowing they were running out of lame excuses. I honestly think they would have rather started the film with "The Dead Are Alive" caption instead.

The Spectre gunbarrel sort of reminds me of the one from GoldenEye 64 with the flat look and how it slowly scrolls across the screen. But even the one in GoldenEye 64 still had the wobble effect at the end, and a better blood flow effect for that matter. Then there is Craig, who walks like Shaggy, laughably revealing the gun in his right hand. He also tries to mimic Dalton's shooting pose this time, but is nowhere near as smooth.

I'm not saying that Spectre having a perfect gunbarrel opening would have made the film perfect, it's just frustrating how they struggle to get a 20 second long sequence right. I guess the baby steps analogy of Craig's Bond evolving can also be applied the the gunbarrel sequence now, too.

That gun barrel was pretty sad, seeing it on the big screen exposed the flaws even more, the gun in Craig's hand was glaringly obvious, the whole thing came off as a one take after thought. When you combine this with the Photoshop like appearance of the teaser poster you have to wonder what Craig was doing to prevent him from giving this film any attention!

A Mr P Brosnan wasn't too impressed: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/spectre ... nor-bourne

Sounds like he's done being polite about the Craig films.

It's a movie with Daniel Craig. Of course it does not feel like a Bond film. I feel he still said it in a polite manner. I am curious to hear what other Bonds think of the movie. I get the feeling we would all love Connery's comment.

I don't think they care for it or else they would have been out already parsing it like dalton, Moore and Brosnan did last time.

The Good:
6. Feels like an actual Bond movie at times. (still ties in with Craig's previous 3 movies). Because of this point, this is my favorite Craig 007 movie.
5. The gadgets are back
4. Léa Seydoux's Ms. Swann was a good Bond girl.
3. The car and Q's lab
2. Voldka Martini... Shaken, not stirred
1. The gun barrel finally starts out the movie. THANK YOU. Was that so hard? :007:

The Bad:
6. Just like Quantum of Solace, the plot can be hard to follow on 1st watch (I hope it makes more sense after repeat viewings)
5. Christoph Waltz is wasted
4. The Bloufeld charactor isn't done justice. The brother thing is stupid
3. Sam Medez's direction is a mess.
2. The wardrobe. Craig is dressed horribly. This isn't something that would bother me so much usually, but this is Bond.
1. The thing really holding this movie back is Daniel Craig. He doesn't wanna be there and it shows. He still lacks the charm of Bond. He does that smug smile, and you can tell he's really trying hard. Bottom line, I might have believed this to be a Bond movie if it wasn't for Craig.

Overall.... I can see the light at the end of the tunnel with this movie. I think Bond is on his way back. Next step would be casting a new Bond.
I don't know if it the current fashions - tight shiny suits, or Craig's body shape, but he does have some ill fitting outfits.

Craig can't be Bond as he lacks the charm. He can only play a grim, one-faced spy - and that's not Bond.

As someone on this forum once said "all those feathers and he still can't fly...all that money and he's still not Bond".

Great review!

Trying to help out I was going through some of the many hundreds of negative reviews, many mention that opening sequence as very disturbing. A few compared it to Hentai tentacle porn. I love the imagery of the austere, acclaimed, theatre direct Sam Mendes happing upon one of the reviews and puzzling over the word 'hentai'. I hope he googels it

Have you noticed for all the talk of Craig being a more human believable Bond, he's the only Bond to exhibit superhuman strength. In QOS he had that ridiculous scene where he locked a guy in a closet or bathroom by breaking off a steel door handle as if it were nothing. In Spectre, he easily breaks the wrist ties that he is bound with. It's as if they just gave up in that scene. They couldn't figure out how to get him out of the ties so they simply had him snap them. They would have been better off to just cut to the next scene where he is free and let the audience assume that he found a clever way to get untied because he is Bond.

Both are examples of lazy film making.

I remember the part when Bond ripped off the door handle in Quantum of Solace. That was very strange. There was another scene (I can't remember which film) where he flipped over a motorbike. Daniel Craig's Bond acts all tough as though he is the Incredible Hulk.

Spectre (Sony):

That this film didn’t make my “worst of the year” list is only a matter of finding movies that were worse and as a token of mercy with the knowledge that the 007 franchise can completely ignore this installment next time out with no long term harm done. More overtly dull than Die Another Day and playing like a watered-down and dumbed-up cocktail of Skyfall and (pick your least favorite Roger Moore entry), this really was the worst 007 adventure since Roger Moore bowed out with A View to a Kill back in 1985.

That it still made $835 million worldwide (including $196m domestic) is proof of the sheer strength of the brand, and that no one lousy entry can do any real damage since it’s only a commitment of 2-3 hours every 2-3 years. But yeah, this stitched together entry tries to put Daniel Craig in a lighter, more conventional James Bond movie, while also riffing on generational nostalgia and long form franchise-building. But none of the parts work and it ends up being an inferior example of all of the above. This is a film rooted in a mystery that all relevant parties already know the answer to and for whom the big reveals mean nothing to anyone in the movie itself.

The reveal that Christoph Waltz is indeed playing John Harrison is as inessential as it is ineffective, and the last act is so absurdly fantastical in a “Bond saves the day and wins it all without breaking a sweat” fashion that I’m inclined to believe fan theories that it was all a dream. Craig is doing his best to enjoy himself and the film’s pre-credits sequence is a classic, but too much of the film consists of aimless action, dispirited variations on scenes we saw in Skyfall, and a stunning lack of clever dialogue or wordplay. In a year filled with spirited spy movies (Spy, Kingsman, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation) that riffed on the Bond template, it is ironic that the 007 franchise riffed on itself yet fell flat on its face.

The bold text summed it up Captain :!: A cinematic flop that the minions threw out their good money on, just because it was a Bond film. We deserve.....and DEMAND, better than this garbage :!: FBF, mission accomplished :!: Get ready for Henry after Broccoli is relegated to an underling by hopefully, a new distributor.

Its nice to see some honest criticism in film now and again. I have a theory as to why SP was so universally praised in GB and panned in the US, and I ask all you Brits to please correct me if I'm wrong, but Bond is sort of seen as a thing of national pride in GB, the third largest export after Jaguar and Land Rover, it's a bit "unpatriotic" to speak ill of it, no matter how bad it may be, kind of like that one uncle you politely ignore at holiday time. Where as in the US we have no such constraint so the critics here were happy to point out the flaws. That also explains why it made so much money in GB so fast.

Nah, Bond was always more popular with audiences than with critics, at least before Craig came along. The Craig films know how to push critics' buttons, whereas previous Bond films never particularly cared about that before.

It's easy to press todays critics buttons-all you need is to sell a movie like a serious arty piece whether the movie really is one or not. That's what Mendes did with SF and SP.
