I must admit it seems a rather strange turn to go from basic cable back to one of the main broadcast stations in the USA.

CBS is one of the original big 3 stations. Undoubtedly Die Another Day had more watching it in re-run than Royale will have broadcast on a cable only netwrok.
As for the other classic Bond movies; they lost their value for on air broadcast after TBS and other cable networks playing them back to back since 1995.

It's Spike TV. Have you seen all the other films they air? A lot of Steven Seagal and Chuck Norris flicks. A film like DAD fits perfectly with the bunch.
It's got a lot of elements young American action junkies would recognize such as "extreme" moments like having Bond surfing twice in the film, actors from youth targeted flicks like The Fast and the Furious (Rick Yune), a high profile actress who Maxim considers the best Bond girl (Halle Berry) and of course Pierce Brosnan is basically the man Spike's target audience grew up with (Generation Y) so it's their best bet. Die Another Day is just the perfect Bond film for Spike TV to air. Roger Moore has had his share of Bond films getting aired frequently.
Pierce Brosnan is for the 18-25 target audience while Roger Moore is for the 26-35 target audience. They're within Spike's targets. Notice how they rarely air the Connery flicks, Daltons and OHMSS? It's not close to the target audience. Because they have a better chance with Moore and Brosnan.
They own the rights to Star Trek TNG, DS9 and VOY, with the middle being my favorite because it's the best written Trek show. But they air TNG and VOY more constantly and act like DS9 doesn't exist. Why? Because TNG was popular in its time and VOY has enough gratuitous sex and violence to be considered Spike material.
Afterall, isn't Spike the only program that airs a Video Game Awards?
