Is the new Fantastic Beasts film not out over there yet? I'll be interested to see how that does. There seems to be a distinct lack of enthusiasm for this franchise compared to Harry Potter, plus the dreaded "troubled production history" for this instalment in particular.

Box office thread

I’m seeing ads for it, but the last movie JK Rowling kind threw away everything that worked in the first movie. We are not excited to see the new movie, and we loved the first movie.
Production troubles and Johnny Depp being fired have nothing to do with it.
Personally I feel JK Rowling violated the premise of several of the characters firmly established in the first movie for her own her own either lack of imagination or desire to tell another story without creating new characters. I’d be happy if the new movies doesn’t suck but have no expectations of it being good.
So I guess I could be pleasantly surprised

I kept meaning to check, and I kept forgetting. But it only made $7 million on its opening weekend here, less than half what the previous film made. In the US, based on its Thursday premiere, it's projected to make somewhere in the high $40s, again well below the previous film's $55 million opening weekend. I think this franchise is done.

$43 million estimate for Dumbledore. Unless the actuals are waaaay higher, I think we can stick a fork in this franchise. The only real hope is a Cursed Child movie with the original cast, and Dan Radcliffe has already said he's not interested.

Yeah they killed that fantastic beasts franchise however the original as I remember didn’t do that great compared to other potter movies, but did well enough to warrant a sequel

Strangely I’d say the first movie hit a almost perfect balance but the second went back to far rewriting characters established in the first movie. After that movie I gave up on the series’s never buying the the second movie and not being aware the third was done or coming out. It’d have to be a hell of a good movie to get me to care about the franchise again

Ok Take it back. Slightly fantastic beasts one made $814,044,001, no idea if that includes rereleases.
Two was a huge drop $654,855,901
I doubt three will make it past $600

The problem I believe it’s JK Rowling, she could do no wrong at one point now she’s is over involved from what the rumors say she is screwing up decent productions and make last minute rewrites nobody is happy with but she has the rights to do it

I've heard a lot of people say this. That if it was actually a series about Newt Scamander finding magical beasts, they'd enjoy it a lot more, but that they lost interest when it became purely a Harry Potter prequel.

Actuals are in, and Dumbledore is actually below the estimates, with $42.1 million domestic. The worldwide total is $192 million, less than the reported $200 million production budget. I'd be very surprised if this movie eventually ends up turning a profit.

It matches how I feel about the fantastic beast franchise, and again we really like the first movie but the second movie just killed a lot of things about the first movie we liked so much so we weren’t even looking forward to the third movie. Don’t really know know anything about controversies

JK Rowling went from being a darling of Hollywood being someone most of the critics are saying should leave. Or sell to WB similar to how Lucas sold to Disney

If it had been a hbomax release Hollywood would blame that for the poor numbers. I think the movie market has changed enough that finicky audiences affect the bottom line much more than ever had before, and that was becoming big before Covid hit
Reminds me of how Hollywood became dependent on DVD revenues when those dried up they assume the all I do is make a new format and the revenue wood come back, I think they think the same thing about movies they expect people just to show up for anything that is showing not realizing people are a little more picky now and less willing to forgive poor storytelling poor acting poor production.

Spider-Man proved there can still be bigs where the people will go out to see movies again and will buy tickets while the digital copy is released.

I think only the very online were aware of the various controversies. I doubt they made a big difference to the box office. I think there has just been a general waning of enthusiasm. Even Harry Potter seems to have fallen out of fashion a bit. Its fans now are mainly adults who grew up with it, rather than it being something that continues to attract new generations of children.

That’s true. At one time the potter books couldn’t be published fast enough and the movies couldn’t be adapted to hit the screen soon enough.

I don’t think is as big a part of the public consciousness as it once was, our nieces and nephews really don’t pay attention to it.

People like a throw around the term to wizarding world, which as a fan base is pretty big, its just doesn’t seem to be a motivator that will outstrip bad content. Even Star Wars and to a lesser extent marvel found that out with a few movie self destructing on the launchpad.
