Grim. One of my Facebook friends posted this graph of UK cinema attendances, showing how far they have fallen from their peak in 1948. The occasional blockbusters such as No Way Home, Maverick and, it pains me to say it, NTTD are not enough to slow the overall decline, made worse by Covid. Image

A part of it I think I streaming /dvr changed how people consume television and movies. When the decline of dvd began dvr/tivo was blamed and the industry tried to stop dvr from auto skipping commercials.
Streaming revenue changed the game with most studios desperately trying to get their foot in the door to get a fraction of what Netflix and Disney make.
Movie theaters only recently we’re trying to make the experience a upgraded one, better picture, seating , snack choices. But imho the cost for going, on a date night or the family didn’t make sense to a lot of people.

Of course the real culprit might be lack of content people want to see in theaters.

I realise that I'm part of the problem, but I find it increasingly hard to justify the price of a cinema ticket except for the mega-blockbusters. I've been trying to find figures for the average price of a cinema ticket in real terms year by year, say in 2000 dollars, though it could be any year. So far no success, but it just feels more expensive now than it did in the past, even allowing for inflation. Streaming seems the natural home for smaller or mid-budget films, especially now that TV screens are a lot bigger than they were, say, 20 years ago.

Our 4K tv is nice enough, with decent picture, one of those no name Best Buy brand’s and honestly didn’t cost much, we really enjoy watching movies/series on it. Beside the good theaters closed in Covid we really have a hard time justifying going out to the movies unless it really is a must see in theaters.

We look forward to new series streaming more than movies. Content and writing for the most part is very good. I know we’ve gotten older and we first were going out we needed a reason to see each other and someplace to go and something to do. Guess we don’t have to have a reason anymore.

No I look to our nieces and nephews what kind of trends actually matter to people , and it’s kind of surprising that it’s not what I thought kids in the future would care about, in someway kind of retro. Doesn’t have to be the latest greatest or best picture and sound. iPhone video and FaceTime more that good enough to watch a concert.

Wonder what the expectations were for the Avatar re-release? The way it was being hyped, you'd think it was a new blockbuster movie.

I wasn’t all that aware of the build up to re- release avatar , I cared about the sequels in 2010

The remastering I’m not sure was necessary or would make an improvement. Problem with 3D is it used lower resolution for the most part so remastering it might affect some scenes that looked good originally . And the point of the series was to highlight 3D filmmaking and story telling and that fad has come and gone. I don’t think 3D is an option for most tvs anymore

I liked the movie and hoped James Cameron wouldn’t screw up a good first story like so many director/story tellers do. Still do. The part of the history of the film where he went over budget financed the rest himself and was rewarded by success is great. Cameron also supposedly fought with fox to get ads and other trailers pulled from the video release , and fox pre Disney was bad about putting ads in trailers and other things that could not be skipped even if you owned the movie, not a rental copy or digital, they forced ads. One of the worst companies to do so.

After all these years I’m still bothered that Cameron sued Nickelodeon to keep the word Avatar from being used in their cartoon series which used the term correctly forcing the name change to last airbender and legend of Kora, those series used Avatar correctly. All to protect his franchise which took a decade plus to come up with a sequel. Babs has to look at Cameron’s release every schedule with envy

I was going to see Black Adam, mainly for Pierce. But lousy reviews and only a B+ Cinemascore rating make me think that maybe I should save my pennies.

Black Adam seems to be doing sort of okayish at the box office, despite the lousy reviews. But with a budget of $200 million, it's going to be a struggle to show a profit from its theatrical run. Hopefully it can claw some of that back from streaming revenue, TV sales, lunchboxes etc.

I haven’t seen the reviews if this movie is any good, last few marvel movies have missed the mark.
I think going forward this will be the reality for theater owners , big popcorn movies will drive the Bo, in between smaller film will be lucky to break 30-40 million on a weekend

Latest Weekend: Nov 11-13
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever $180.0M
Black Adam $8.6M
Ticket to Paradise $6.1M
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile $3.2M
Smile $2.3M
