BP was down 62% on Friday from the previous Friday. If that holds, it will not top $100 million this weekend. The fact is a lot of tickets were given out for this film for free to groups, that were prior corporate purchases, and this is fraudulently propping up the box office, because there is more politics underneath here than there is actual film content, driving this box office.----------Forbes: Businesses, churches, student groups, sororities, fraternities and even family groups are buying out thousands of theater seats and attending en masse. The #BlackPantherChallenge, now a very popular hashtag, kicked off in Harlem when Frederick Joseph started a GoFundMe with the intent of taking all the kids from the neighborhood Boys & Girls Club to see a movie directed by black man, starring a mostly black cast, featuring black women with natural hair and showcasing a black superhero as a lead character in a big budget Marvel movie. Some $400,000 later, the movement has spread well beyond New York City. In Chicago, local businessman Rodger Jackson and his partners, who produce the Web series "No Chiraq" and own a streaming platform service named The-I, decided to rent out a theater or two and give the tickets to local not profits including groups like My Block, My Hood, My City. "I said, you know, we could just go ahead and buy a small theater," says Jackson. "We’ll just find some nonprofits to give it to. That’s all it was." Some 300 tickets later, Jackson and his partners are contemplating buying out yet more theater time slots. "Once I posted about it [to social media] my inbox started blowing up," he says. "We just want to get as many kids as we could to see Black Panther." Jackson is not alone. Top Teens, a youth group in Chicago, is doing the same. And at least one church in that Midwest city is bringing congregants to a local theater to watch the film together and then to have a discussion about it later. Lead by Pastor Otis Moss III, members of Trinity United Church of Christ plan to attend the film in groups of 150-300. Though they aren't directly part of the #BlackPantherChallenge, their intent is largely the same. The church has bought out at least seven screenings at a local Studio Movie Grill theater located in a neighborhood on the city's South Side.----------on RT, only 78% actually liked it vs. 90% that liked Jumanji and 89% that liked Captain America:Civil War and 91% that liked Iron Man and 88% that liked Thor:Ragnarok :!: It's just barely above the pathetic Justice League's 76% liked on RT :!: It is now quite obvious what is going on here in reality :!:

Um, a lot of movies get charity screenings added to the opening weekend. Like bond, several Craig movies had $25-30 million dollar bumps on opening weekends. I don’t see this a much different. And I doubt it’s that much of the total.

Yeah, I doubt charity screenings alone could propel a movie to a $202 million opening weekend. Churches often organise free screenings of religious movies, for example, but with the possible exception of The Passion of the Christ, few of them achieve Black Panther‘s level of success.

It’s a movie a lot of black families want to see. I disagree with the naysayers trying to come up with excuses to put down black panther, it’s not perfect in fact most of the story revolving around Michael B Jordan were extremely cliché. But I also don’t like the activists trying to use a popular movie to falsely build up their own brand of hate. Black panther is not about the hate group of the same name, it’s about a black hero from a made up country in Africa. A country if real more guilty of neglecting the plight of their fellow man (of every race as the movie points out) than any other country in history.

There are political trappings in the story but the story I think rises above the activism.
Bottom line the movie gives people with African heritage a lot to take pride in.
IMHO America is about all men created equal except for most of our history it’s not lived up to this ideal. Beyond counting people as three fifths a white man, Mixed races can’t marry, segregation, legalized racism.
And all that is supposed to be forgotten?
Indians (native Americans) were not given citizenship until 1927 (so much for the 14th amendment), until 1957 they couldn’t vote in most states.
There is a lot of sins American has to make up for, I don’t blame people who were oppressed for centuries taking a victory lap when being recognized/accepted by popular culture.

So big O, when do the Asians get their due in the Marvel Universe?----------It's not a Marvel issue though. Hollywood has trouble casting Asians as anything but a sidekick or a supporting character. "It’s changed in Hollywood, but only so much," Masa Oka from Heroes and Hawaii 5-0 told The Hollywood Reporter. "You can’t get Asians cast in leads yet. Maybe as a second lead, but the lead is still going to be Caucasian or African-American. But Hollywood is fickle, it follows trends. If a show or a film did well with an Asian lead, then it would take off."--------Bruce Lee was the epitome of a major Asian film star that was popular in the USA, and that was in the 1970s, and that was for kung fu films. If he did not die, he might have been used in American spy films.

I don’t think it’s a cultural problem. I believe we love good actors and good stories regardless of ethnicity.
I think it’s Hollywood’s problem. They don’t reflect the values of America they reflect the values they think will make them the most money without noticing what the rest of America is doing. When they finally give the green light to a project with a black hero they are surprised all of America buys tickets. It’s their own prejudice that kept them from producing a movie people wanted to see. I’m sure Hollywood thinks they made a difference finally making black panther, but they are just slow adapting to a place the rest of us already were.

Plenty of great actor to give Asians and native Americans, native Alaskans and native Hawaiians their own leading roles. Nobody is flipping channels refusing to stop on the prime time drama with a Asian star. That Hollywood’s own prejudiced fulfilling itself in the pop culture Hollywood creates.

BTW there is no need for a woman as Bond any more than there’s a need for Craig as the Black Panther. Stop trying to remake established roles with different twist Hollywood!

Marvel did catch some flak, as I recall, for casting a white actor in Doctor Strange to play a character who was Asian in the comics.

Wasn’t there are marvel villain who was a woman in the comics they cast a man in the role? I’m pretty sure that was a controversy too. It was years ago, I thinknit made the news because the board meeting leaked and it because was they didn’t think fans would buy the toys. Or some crazy crap excuse like that.

That does ring a bell. I can't remember which character it was, though. FBF might know, he's probably the biggest Marvel fan on this board.

The Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) has blasted the casting choice of Tilda Swinton in “Doctor Strange” on the eve of the Marvel Studio movie’s opening weekend. In a lengthy statement released, the organization said the film was “tarnished” by the “whitewashing” of “The Ancient One” — the title character’s mentor. In the film, the British actress plays “The Ancient One,” who in the original comic book is portrayed as a Tibetan male. “Given the dearth of Asian roles, there was no reason a monk in Nepal could not be Asian,” says MANAA President Rob Chan. “Had [writer/director Scott] Derrickson cast an Asian as the revered leader who guides the main character to become a better human being and to develop his sorcery powers, it would’ve given a big boost to that actor’s career. While actresses deserve the kinds of bold roles usually reserved for men, white actresses are seen onscreen more than Asians of any gender. And Tilda Swinton can afford to turn down roles.” Referring to 1984’s classic film “The Karate Kid,” which landed Pat Morita an Oscar nomination, Chan points out, “Asians can’t even be the Mr. Miyagi to Daniel-San anymore!”

I Googled "Black Panther charity screenings". There were several stories, but they were all 100 people in Chicago, 450 people in Philadelphia and so on. Hardly enough to propel a film to the second biggest sophomore weekend in history, beaten only by The Force Awakens.

I think death wish and red sparrow are going to bomb over all, but for spy / action assassin movies they’ll do about normal. Every movie in this genre except for Bond only make small numbers. So John wick numbers if they do well. Red Sparrow I think will not do as well as death wish just because of bad word of mouth and the star getting political before the release.

I haven't heard of anyone who's enthusiastic about the new Death Wish. Plus, they remade it only a few years ago (as Death Sentence), and that wasn't exactly a smash hit either. I can't imagine it had a huge budget, though. Bruce Willis is not the star he was in the '80s and '90s, and revenge thrillers in general are fairly cheap to make, which is why they're a staple of low-budget straight-to-DVD moviemaking.
