Estimates
I think this is a weak opening for the LEGO movie, I thought the predictions were $55

Glass is done with under $300 million WW. If it were anything but a $20 million dollar movie they would never make money.

Aquaman and spiderverse have held on in the top ten, spiderverse while a good movie didn’t smash any records at $90 million cost with $352 million in bo.

1 N The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part WB $34,400,000 - 4,303 - $7,994 $34,400,000 - 1

Poor alita, poor opening from a weak BO overall. Hope it can hold on like spiderverse to earn a decent enough number to get a sequel but I doubt it.

I also wonder if Hollywood punting the last few week afraid of opening anything worth the audiences time hasn’t cause stagnation we are seeing here. The audience was for alita was then end of December watching King Arthur of the fish.

Estimates 3-day weekend
1 N Alita: Battle Angel Fox $27,800,000 - 3,790 - $7,335 $36,516,232 $170 1

Looks how to train your dragon proves the February audience is still there opening bigger than the predictions I saw.
Alita, is not gain traction in the USA, which is a shame because it’s a well made balanced movie, that really is what should be expected for a big screen adaptation of a comic or book series. The Chinese and Japanese markets still could save it but it looks doubtful. BTW We watched Mortal engines on Early digital release, its another movie that has potential and big names backing it up, and poor screen numbers per theater so it would never actually be capable of big numbers.
but Peter Jackson didn’t bring the good the way James Cameron did, mortal engines visually stunning did not pack the punch alita does.
But how bout them dragons? /end sarcasm

At one time, anything over 50% was considered bad. But these days, movies are so front-loaded that it's quite rare for anything to drop less than that in its second weekend.

I think you’re right. Last few block busters I want to say 60% drop was considered bad. They are just trying to gauge performance longevity, which isn’t what it used to be, in a month most big movies are played out, only rare cases like Jumanji work out that solid repeat weekend in the top ten add up to a big payday.
But in marvels case it’s almost at $800 million it going to break a billion and serve as a appetizer for the next infinity war movie.

I had a quick look at Box Office Mojo, and interestingly, PG animated movies like How To Train Your Dragon etc seem to have smaller second weekend drop-offs than PG13 live-action blockbusters like the Marvel films. Wonder why that is.

My guess would be more families going together, I see plenty of kids at pg13 marvel movies but there is a line for parents on what upsets younger children. If the story like incredibles and shrek are family friendly enough for children but written in a way adults have a few jokes they get I think it’s more likely to get repeat family viewings.
My brothers wife will met up with family friends in bigger cities and she and the other moms will bring the kids to a movies they already know the kids like. So they pick of movies that the kids might enjoy to kill some time and take a break themselves.

Pg-13 are more middle of the road for action and violence, it could be the audience isn’t there for it after seeing it more than once or twice and that’s all there is to it. My thoughts are that they are not safe enough for whole families (parents, all the kids) and friends to go to. I know we’ve gone to movies we thought we might take the nieces and nephews to before taking them to decided if it’s a pg13 movie they could enjoy or not. Infinity war was a big no go for kids. I wasn’t going to spend hours explaining the dust in the wind ending. One nephew got upset at the violence in rogue one, yet loves the other Star Wars movies which I didn’t think were any better about violence. But the pint being is a upset kid is just too much a hassle to risk paying for a movie ticket on a questionable rating.

Oh I remember one of things about pg movies we used to talk about was how many more tickets they sold to make the same bo as pg13, because of the children ticket prices.

Captain Marvel has grossed $825 million worldwide, making it the #1 movie of the year so far. Interestingly, the #2 movie of 2019 worldwide is the Chinese SF flick The Wandering Earth, which has grossed nearly $700 million, almost all of it from domestic audiences.

Only a $45 million estimated opening weekend. Not very impressive. I think Tim Burton has passed his sell-by date (though I thought Miss Peregrine's Home was something of a return to form for him).

Only a $45 million estimated opening weekend. Not very impressive. I think Tim Burton has passed his sell-by date (though I thought Miss Peregrine's Home was something of a return to form for him).

Dumbo had a lot of presence and buzz. Compared to what is a good question. Still it wasn’t a John carter Disney pulled the plug on because they bought marvel.
If lion kings fails maybe the live actions not marketed toward girls is a loser.
I can’t remember what live actions jungle book did. It was actually a good movie, we watched it on Blu-ray with my brothers kids.
