Memorial Day weekend had a one off with the bo looking like it was staging a comeback, first weekend in June held some of those gains , looking like this weekend drops again.

What do you think, is it making a come back?
It is too late?
Will it be a mix of big draws highlighting the smaller market?

My guess is the market changed. It’s going to be a smaller BO for big movies and the unspoken direct market slowly becoming more important to Hollywood.

Even if they wanted to enough theaters are permanently closed they could never go back to the way it was. I don’t think it has anything to do with covid vaccines or not. It’s the population changing how it get entertainment.

There’s some talk the Hollywood wants theater owners to be come more up market like the imax and other did before covid. Nicer, cleaner. Better experience viewing the movie. I think that masks the problem of movies already overcharging for tickets and drinks. Bring more upscale to bring value to the experience isn’t going to make the experience worth more than it was two years ago.

Black widow didn’t break the domestic bo of $100 million, which they thought it might in early reporting.
Slightly beating FF franchise record .

There will be some analysis of the Disney plus release, and it’s impact.

My guess is far as bo right about here $70-80 million is the upper limit for now, I don’t think streaming has the impact theater owners want to claim. It a phantom like the used to blame torrents for unsold dvds and tickets. When imho it was counting unhatched eggs as lost sales.
Where as day and date is only another venue that circumvents the bo

Latest Weekend: Jul 9-11
Black Widow $80.0M
F9: The Fast Saga $10.9M
The Boss Baby: Family Business $8.7M
The Forever Purge $6.7M
A Quiet Place Part II $3.0M

I think a lot of people are still nervous about going to the cinema. This pandemic is far from over, sadly.

Disney has revealed that Black Widow has made $60 million from streaming so far. Streaming services normally keep those sorts of figures under wraps, so they're obviously happy with the news.

Interesting take Aways from the bo

Black widow was never expected to be a top tear marvel movie, more of a ant man and wasp kind of deal than big name draw. So it’s performance is about where most reasonable people expected it to be. There were a few places predicting it might break the pandemic curse and open $100 million domestic. Which technically it did
Disney plus made Disney $60 million world wide, some say that means at a minimum $20 million from the USA & Canada.
What is different about Disney plus is that $60 million or over 2 million people rented black widow, all of this money goes directly to Disney, no theater split, no distributor percentage, no extra tax or currency exchange,
About 16 million tickets sold world wide assuming a low ball price of $10 a ticket which is not true for most areas but it’s what the statistics are. A very significant chunk of change came from digital home release. Although Disney says they will be rolling back the plus day of release movies. I don’t think any studio is going to completely walk away from such a large payday

Far as going to the movies is concerned the close theater to us that we liked is still shut down. Honestly the price of going is more in mind than before. It was a part of our lives we expected to spend money on and now it’s not.

Biggest thing Hollywood should notice is it’s only the popcorn movies the industry likes to mock that families tend to flock to making money.

Latest Weekend: Aug 6-8
The Suicide Squad $26.5M
Jungle Cruise $15.7M
Old $4.1M
Black Widow $4.0M
Stillwater $2.9M

Suicide squad is back! Definitely live up to the name this time.

I think they finally got Harley Quinn just about right.

But it’s not a family friendly DC or marvel movie. If you like the last suicide squad or Deadpool then this movie will be a blast.

Looking at the numbers for the last month or so It seems big tent poll movies still attract the audience. But mediocre offerings draw a medium crowd and running out of gas out quickly. Space jam I’m looking at you!
Suicide squad is a R rated comic book adventure set in the not do popular Zack Snyder universe that’s definitely under new management.
But not Aquaman or wonder woman level of good or family friendly.

Honestly I don’t think hbomax or early digital releases are hurting bo. Bo is hurting on its own. People got out of the habit of going to the movies, and capacities are halved. I don’t think covid is the answer for blame at this point over half the population in vaccinated or has immunities from prior infection so aside from a variant (maybe they use this name to rip off Loki?) most of day to day business including movies in theoretically back. .
I think the new strategy will have to be hit the audience while the movie is hot, on as many sellable fronts as possible. For most none blockbusters it may be smarter to cash in on the hype over the slow game of the old bo system.

Far as hbomax hurting suicide squad it’s subscription base is so small even if those who have it I doubt enough of us saw it on hbomax to move the needle. Disney+ on the other hand did show they could move the needle worldwide but still only a fraction of what bo gave them. But that $60 million (probably more now) didn’t change hands, it’s all Disney’s money not theater or distributor to split it with.
Scarlett Johansson‘s lawsuit is about those profits and the old world clauses her agents secured that get a percentage of Bo.
But I don’t think that $60-80-100 million Disney plus got translated in to movie ticket sales.

Of course the theaters closest to our end of the world a closed we’d have to drive further to see anything, so that hurts numbers as did limited seating.
My point comes back to I think old studio Hollywood can’t blame the lack of audience on streaming, which new studios like Netflix, Disney plus, discovery plus, successfully monetize. I think they’ll have to adapt like the music industry when mp3 became popular. They blamed everything under the sun for CD sales dropping but finally gave the consumers the way to buy music they wanted, and now have monthly fees for unlimited access to most of the music out there.

I went to see it on Saturday and really enjoyed it. Sucks that all the DC movies I like seem to flop, while the dismal Man of Steel made like $750 million.

Yeah, it interesting but the story is the theater apologist themed.
We liked going to the movies just haven’t been since the pandemic mostly because the best closest theater is out of business.
Only think I’d point out is $85 million while kind of impressive Disney plus gets that for big releases and doesn’t split the money.

I want to see this one as well just because the marvel universe is well done.
This weekend wasn’t going to happen for us family members tested covid positive last week so even if the movies were open near us covid threw us in a loop. The kids aren’t that sick but their mom is worse. But not bad, older kids and parents have the vaccine. Youngest two thankfully are mild symptoms, sorry just kind of why I’m off my game today

But this looks like things are returning to something approaching pre-Covid conditions, which means we could be subjected to stories about how NTTD is a triumphant hit and surely nobody can fill Daniel Craig's shoes etc etc.

However, there is now talk of a fresh lockdown here in October, which could take the wind out of its sails on its home turf.
