Wikipedia, citing Deadline Hollywood, gives Downton's production budget as a more plausible-sounding $20 million. That doesn't include the publicity budget, but using the usual rule of thumb of needing to make back three times its production budget to break even, it has already gone into profit worldwide.

That is what I thought it would be.
It’s Massive money maker. I see the same thing about $18-20 million. Wonder where the early google searches came up with the $80 million
Wonder if the story became twisted with ad astra ?

Going into this weekend so we’re saying no real contenders left last weekends too three more room before joker is released. Boy were they wrong. Massive reshuffling with only downton stay about where it was expected to be, ad astra and Rambo were shuffled around with old holdovers taking their place

Hustlers and It Chapter 2 seem to be hanging on in there. I wonder if the threat of mass shootings will depress Joker's box office?

Box office thread

Postby Omega » Mon Sep 30, 2019 10:45 am

Good question. I don’t have this fear at all, more worried about the popcorn being burnt. I’ve not had anyone in my movie groups express this fear but is not representative of the larger audience. My gut feeling is if it’s a good movie and good origins of the joker it will do well like Aquaman or Wonder Woman would in it’s place.

I’m Not sure the origins of the joke is movie worthy, meaning it might disappoint. It might be better to ignore origins and get in with providing a good movie with the character instead. Origin movies tend to get stuck trying provide emotional impetus for the character being created then who that character is. (For example See every bond movie since 2006)
Not sure the audience will like a joker if we know where he come from and sympathize with his plight.

The suicide squad version obviously has been dropped from the DCEU, fellow actors said they never met Jared Leto because he was always in character. What was weird about Leto’s joker (besides everything) is he was hardly in the first squad movie, of corse Margot Robbie was d**n good as Quinn and will be back.

Ledgers joker I think will remain a classic far as the movie version goes.

The joker was always meant to be a mystery of where he came from, Mark hamill’s joker from the animated series was just about perfect

I wonder how much of this if hype and how much is people really feeling the Joker movie builds up psychopaths. I know WB would rather have people forget about the shootings in what 2012? So I don’t think they are pushing the narrative, anti gun crowed? maybe but the joker as a character was never trigger happy like say Rambo, I don’t think it helps them other than using the fear of possible danger to promote their cause.
Could just be bloggers/critics reacting to the first good portrayal of the joker since ledger with knee jerk reaction that it’s so good some demented psychopath will try to make a name for themselves.

BTW the aurora, Colorado theater where the dark knight shooting happened will not be showing the joker movie.

Huh, after googling the shooting to see what year it was, it does seem some political movement behind orchestrating this reaction. Letters being sent and so on, that’s some organization pushing easily consumable taking points to 24 hr media trying to fill air time. Nobody sends letters anymore it’s a stunt to get attention.

Isn't Jared Leto in Suicide Squad 2 then? I still haven't seen the first one.

Suicide squad, I liked but acknowledge it had problems, the celebrity gets like will smith, Affleck and Leto weren’t worth it. Also trying to tie in to the Zack Snyder crapverse, sucked.
From the ads of the time it looked like the joker had a bigger role, he has one but it wasn’t up to the hype of Marilyn Manson meets the joker.

I think WB/dc was in such a rush to get to avengers they forgot nobody has seen these characters in decent movies or tv shows.
IMHO people wanted to experience the stories again, WB assumed they wanted something more dark and gritty than what those characters were.

I like the end of Batman begins because it setup for all the adventures we knew he could have. I wanted to see Superman open up on the stories we knew he should have and see it expand from there. Hopefully they are on the right track now. Wonder Woman and Aquaman seen to indicate improvements.
Forgot about Shazam, ugh, maybe not.

Plus another $140.5 million Internationally, for a worldwide total of $234 million. $55 million is the figure I saw for the budget as well, so I imagine Warner Bros are very happy this weekend.

Did the media's war on Joker backfire?

(The headline is the article's, not mine. Personally, I think calling it a "war" is an exaggeration - it was more like a moral panic, like the one over Child's Play in the wake of the Jamie Bulger murder).

The article points out that liberals are insignificant in society in terms of shaping people's thoughts :!: Just look at the JOKERS in the House Of Representatives to see for yourself :!: They are NOT the moral authority of the world and when they do not get their way they turn to lunacy and rage :!:

We were going to see the joker but didn’t just because of family obligations. Probably see it next weekend.

There’s been a few Risky but smart movies like Deadpool and joker with low budgets l, lowered risk and big potential.
Joker maybe a response to Deadpool, just a guess from the hard R rating. Hollywood is full of bloated producer fee movies, what’s actually spent on actors and sets is often blown away by other salaries.

I vaguely remember the Christian Right/
Fundamentalist Christians condemning the 1989 Batman, for Bruce Wayne having sex with Kim Basinger out of marriage. Saying a swearword, glorifying violence. For Batman returns I know had that community up in arms.
To me it’s amusing to have the left who supported the last temptation of Christ worried about the joker movie, while the right leaning are more accepting.

I think people in power (in a position to think they spin relevant narratives) telling this world of social media what we can and cannot do backfires. Nobody in mass numbers were hanging on to the fears from 2012. I think like me most movie fans wanted a good movie that maybe does justice to the characters.

Fun fact: Joker's opening weekend gross was bigger than that of Justice League, which had a PG13 rating and a much higher budget.

This weekend's forecast from Box Office Mojo:

Joker (4,374 theaters) - $45.0 M
The Addams Family (4,007 theaters) - $29.0 M
Gemini Man (3,642 theaters) - $21.0 M
Abominable (3,495 theaters) - $6.7 M
Downton Abbey (3,016 theaters) - $5.0 M
Hustlers (2,357 theaters) - $3.8 M
Jexi (2,332 theaters) - $3.5 M
It: Chapter Two (2,303 theaters) - $2.9 M
Judy - $2.9 M
Ad Astra (1,678 theaters) - $2.0 M

Surprised that Gemini Man's projected box office is so low. I know Will Smith is not the box office draw he once was, but I'd have thought that the novelty of the de-aging technology would pull some people in.

Gemini Man is a great sci-fi idea, maybe it was a book. the ads I’ve seen in theaters make it interesting but I didn’t notice any tv ads. Will smith is not a draw, he was a big name that got movies made but he’s not a name that makes people go out to see a movie, neither is brad pitt for that matter. What i hope is Pitt and smith have done what Tom cruise has done making interesting projects to keep working hoping one or two are actually good.
Gemini man and ad Astra I think could be good sci-fi stories, and sci-fi is meant to make you think beyond the flashy tech to the meaning and morality behind it.
