Doctors elimination game

Post by Kristatos »

We have them for Bond, why not for the Doctor? I have only included the ten official BBC Doctors here, not Peter Cushing (who played the Doctor in two films that are not generally considered canon) or Richard Hurndall (who played the First Doctor in The Five Doctors following William Hartnell's death). I have also excluded Matt Smith since nobody has seen his portrayal of the Doctor yet except in still photographs. So here goes. The usual rules apply.

1st Doctor (William Hartnell) - 5 points
2nd Doctor (Patrick Troughton) - 5 points
3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee) - 5 points
4th Doctor (Tom Baker) - 6 points +1
5th Doctor (Peter Davison) - 5 points
6th Doctor (Colin Baker) - 4 points -1
7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) - 5 points
8th Doctor (Paul McGann) - 5 points
9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) - 5 points
10th Doctor (David Tennant) - 5 points

I actually find McGann harder to place than Eccleston. I never heard any of the Big Finish audios with him in, so all I have to judge his performance on is two-thirds of a not very good TV movie (though he was fine, it's just the script that was weak). The first two Doctors are next in my sights simply because they were before my time, so I don't feel any particular attachment to them. Unfair perhaps, but I find this contest a much closer-run one than any of the Bond elimination games we've done. My list is bookended by Bakers, with TB at the top and CB at the bottom - it's everything in between that's the tough part!

The Doctors are extremely difficult for me to eliminate any of them. However Chris Ecceston has my ire because of his actions and behaviour. His 9th Doctor was no different than any of his other roles, he is the same rude sarcastic git in everything he does. I have never seen the Doctor be so outright rude to other people and therefore species. While that might be appropriate for 'Claude Rains' in Heroes I felt it was off the mark for the Doctor.

I did start to like Him in the role I never felt he got what the show was about and his leaving the show the way he did aided my dislike of him. When David took over he washed away any concern over Chris because he did things with the Doctor Chris never could.

The First and Second Doctors are classic no doubt and hard to rate since their stories were often rubbish. The Gunfighters is one of the rare shows I will never watch again. The third Doctor while earth bound saw the ebging of what would be the golden era of Tom Baker in the style of stories and way of telling them.

McGann sold me on his doctor from the first moment. That alone would not be enough to vote for him, his audio adventures were outstanding and through them and his image as the Doctor since 1996 he helped keep Doctor Who alive until 2005. 'Sisters of the Flame' and 'The Vengeance of Morbius' are excellent adventures right up there with the best of them. (Too bad BBC7 decide not to buy them)

Yeah, I'm gonna give Sylvester some love too. He gets a lot of stick from fans, but I think he made a good Doctor and while his era had some faults (ever-diminishing budgets and an overreliance on stunt casting), it marked the beginning of the more mature, thoughtful style of storytelling that would continue into the New Adventures and NuWho.

Syl Doc is often maligned by some fans, the things that happened in his short time on the telly continue to influence the current series. One of the things I liked about the TV movie was seeing Sylvester looking like a proper Doctor, with no need for question marks on his jumper.
I have a mate who hates Sylvester because he was too clownish in behaviour and embarrassing as the Doctor. Nothing can beat how embarrassing Colin was as the Doctor. Sylvester had the right mix of frivolous and something more going on. Which all the good Doctors have.
I was thinking of Troughton and 'Tomb of the Cybermen' while everyone is occupied else where the Second Doctor presses the right button to open the Cybermen crypt, something that has confounded the great minds on the expedition.

In my opinion JNT was a huge problem for the series. He made some great innovations and much of what he did in the 7th Doctors series would be used to similar affect in the 2005 series. However it can't make up for all stupid decisions he championed. The biggest would be the costuming because many would never look beyond it.

Agreed. Whilst CB was my least favourite Doctor, I'm not sure that was entirely his fault. Enough people have told me that he was fine in his Big Finish audios and in the fan-produced "Stranger" videos (Doctor Who in all but name) to make me think that he was merely the victim of some bad decisions by JNT and whoever his script editor was at the time.

I think Colin gets underatted because of the shuddy scripts, but in stories like the Mark of the Rani, he showed how good he could be, I do wish he was given another chance by JNT.

Colin was dismissed by the BBC, by that time JNT was not in place to save anybody. JNT wanted to leave the show, the BBC wanted him to stay and Doctor Who to die. They sold the rights as quick as they could to the Americans after the show was cancelled.

Colin does have some nice BF Audio Dramas. I don't know why the teamed him up with a geriatric archaeologist as a companion. BBC webcast has some nice adventures online.
