Just bought the 2014 edition of Maltin

Post by Kristatos »

Leonard Maltin's movie guide has given Spyfail the maximum 4 stars and included it in a list of films unjustly overlooked for a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. Just to give you some idea of how f'ed up this is, bona fide Bond classics such as FRWL, GF and TSWLM only got 3½ stars! Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to listen to one of those relaxation CDs featuring birdsong and ocean waves and stuff, in order to calm myself down.

A couple of days ago, I watched the 1962 classic The Miracle Worker, the story of Helen Keller. In my opinion, THAT is a film worthy of the awards/nominations it received. It really shows how low the quality standards have fallen if the content in Skyfall is considered award worthy.

Those kind of "Movie Reviews" books are all worthless anyway, and Maltin is more full of $#!+ than most. When that snot actually gave Diamonds Are Forever 3 and a half Stars when it's clearly the worst of Sean Connery's Bonds, you can't take anything he says at face value. Good news is I only skimmed it at the downtown bookstore to confirm the Skyfall "praise" so I didn't have to spend a single red cent on that waste of paper.

I completely agree with Barry, Maltin is a good review factory he hasn't met a movie that he didn't love and I imagine a little marketing money in his pocket didn't hurt! Add to that all the artsy fartsy people involved with this travesty and the reviewers fawn all over it.

I have a copy of Leonard Malteser's movie guide from 2000, and many so-called great movies have poor reviews - such as Bladerunner. Is Skyfall really one of the greatest movies of all time?

I've just bought the Christmas Radio Times. In the Christmas film reviews QOS gets 4/5 - "Daniel Craig's grim spy", and Skyfall gets 5/5 - "widely regarded as the best Bond film". The world has gone mad.

Maltin always has a positive review even old b movies get 2.5 stars. Some of the critics are in love with the process of film making and don't see a 1 star movie unless its made with a camcorder.

I always mention this in 2006 Superman Returns was universally hailed as the best super hero movie ever it wasn't only Ebert had the guts to cast the first stone and his review was delayed because of his illness. All of the things he complained about in Superman were doubled in Casino Royale somehow CR was an achievement and SR was a mistake. The Broccoli family kept Bond movies going for 50 years but never kept the quality constant one film to the next would be excellent, felt this way about Pierces movies too, GE great, TND not so bad, TWIN good, DAD not so much, it's not the films were bad it's the production company the Broccoli's didn't care to make sure the movies would be good over be out in time, so far Craig's spy follows the same pattern. I love the 40 years of Bond we got still if they had taken the time on each film the way CR broomed the history making Bond a depressed psychopath would of been received differently. IMO it because Criag's spy is so different form the traditional films that they are rated well over actually being good. Like the cabletv movie guide the stars most movies get do not reflect the quality of the films.

Even the nuttiest fanboy at MI6 would probably draw the line giving Skyfall a rating usually reserved for the likes of Lawrence of Arabia but, yes, that book does have some bizarre rankings.

I don't get the "Maltin never gives a bad review" criticism. As has already been mentioned in this thread, he gave one of my favourite movies, Blade Runner, 1½ stars, and has given "BOMB" ratings to some fairly high-profile releases (including Van Helsing, which I must confess is something of a guilty pleasure of mine).
