Purvis & Wade 007 producers wanted to go into 007's past

Post by Goldeneye »

Purvis and Wade, who have worked on every Bond movie since 1999's The World Is Not Enough, told Digital Spy that they completely reworked Skyfall's finale to take him back to his childhood home with M.

"That idea [to go to Skyfall lodge] came very late in the day. It was in the last two weeks when we were working on the script," Wade said.

"The third act had been action stuff in a European city and we weren't very happy with it and we just felt it was ordinary. This idea came, and we wrote it up as a page and a half, ran it by Sam, Barbara and Michael and said we just want to tear up the third act and do a completely new thing.

"They said 'great'! They've always wanted to explore those areas."

Purvis added: "It's something you can only do once, so you've got to make sure you do it well."

Wade explained that the idea to have Bond and M meet Albert Finney's character Kincade in Scotland allowed them to build a makeshift family for Craig's Bond.

"Once the idea had come that he takes M to the house where he grew up, there's the man who taught him to shoot and it sort of reconstituting his family," he said.

"The whole film is all about her anyway and her as a mother figure to this orphan. He's exposing himself emotionally. It was the perfect opportunity."

"The whole film is all about her anyway and her as a mother figure to this orphan. He's exposing himself emotionally. It was the perfect opportunity." A Bond film about M? They actually admit it and his Mommy Dearest feelings towards her :!: This is stark raving insanity and THIS grosses over $1 billion at the box office, combined with a poor MP origin and a teenage unbelievable Q? Where's FBF? Do you believe this stuff?

No wonder these pair of kiss-ass fanboy HACKS were kept on the payroll for so long by Babs & MGW: they were so IN TUNE with their bosses' pretentious bull$#!+.
And now, just as they've been let go in exchange for the latest flavor-of-the-month "artiste" John Logan, they're apparently (re-)claiming credit for the BIG FINALE that's gotten such "raves" for being oh-so "deep" and "emotional" so they can bask in the acclaim that passed them over in favor of the overrated Paul Haggis and Logan. Garbage.

I'm glad this never happened with Pierce's Bond.

Suit yourself, I thought it worked nicely. I'll admit I probably would have balked at this idea if you told me a year ago, but having seen it I thought it was all done pretty well enough that I found it engaging. I'm so glad they went the route they did for the third act, it was very old school and felt more like a thriller than a generic action climax like the sinking house in CR.

More interviews in on the same topic more or less.

CraveOnline's sister site Coming Soon took an exciting trip to the United Kingdom recently, and brought home with them interviews with Skyfall screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, and new series regular (we hope) Naomie Harris
"He's not as good as the other guy, but he's relentless and doesn't stop." ~ Screenwriter Neal Purvis on Craig's down-to-earth portrayal of James Bond, compared to slicker versions in the past.

"People have said, ‘we miss these characters,' we wanted to go with Casino Royale, have an absolutely clean slate and start over, and introduce them as necessary. The thought was to bring them back, but in a more up to date way." ~ Producer Michael G. Wilson on Skyfall's reintroduction of certain classic characters.

"We set out to make a good movie each time, some are better than others." ~ Barbara Broccoli on disappointing Bond installments like Moonraker and Die Another Day.

"The next one could theoretically start with Bond going into M's office, and M saying, ‘here's the mission' and he'll go off and do it. It could do that, because it's set up now to do that. Maybe it will, it'll be fun if it does." ~ Screenwriter Robert Wade, theorizing about how the ending of Skyfall could affect the next film in the franchise.

"That's quite a huge role, with huge shoes to fill, and I feel intimidated at just the prospect of that, so for now I'm just happy playing Moneypenny, that's a big enough role for me." ~ Naomie Harris, on whether her character might one day graduate to "M" status.

Actually, the first person to come up with that idea was Lois Maxwell. I think this was after she had left the role, but before GE.

Glad that it didn't happen...the one saving grace of the Bond franchise is getting Ralph Fiennes to replace Dame Judi(and I'm a Dame Judi fan and I really feel like the killing off Dame Judi's M was a bad idea-even if Ralph is her replacement.)

I liked Dame Judi too, but I felt the role should have been recast in CR nonetheless. It seems silly to reboot and still keep the same M (actually, I could have just stopped that sentence after the first five words).

Stating the obvious, but the continuity in the Bond films has always been screwy.

Not so much screwy as non-existent, barring the odd callback to previous films or recurring character (I'm talking about supporting characters like JW Pepper, Jaws or General Gogol rather than M, Q or Moneypenny). The only odd thing was Bond staying roughly the same age for 40 years, but he's hardly unique in that. Tons of fictional characters have done the same thing, from Superman to Biggles.

You mean all fans? Really though, nobody gave a toss that Pierce Brosnan was supposed to be playing the same character that thwarted Dr. No's plan in 1962. The reboot was only done to look into 007's early part of his career, for better or worse and eventually bring back the elements together and move on from there while setting up a new playing field. No different than the Superman reboot in 1986.

The Craig series is a new alternate realty Bond (similar to the new Star Trek movies) with a new (invented by Purvis and Wade) family and professional background, new character and soforth.

His background is pretty much in line with Fleming's Bond, the only difference being that it was updated for someone being born in 1968. It's by the start of CR that Craig Bond's timeline truly goes its own path.

Fleming's Bond was much younger when he got his 00 - in his 20's. But Fleming's Bond had a very different career path serving in WWII. Craig's Bond was an SAS man and then became a 00 later in life. Ian Fleming liked a tipple so was a bit loose with the continuity sometimes.

I think the bits about his childhood were invented as Fleming mentioned the Scotch and Swiss parents and him being an orphan but lots of bits were added.
