Skyfall Sets New UK Box Office Record

Post by The Sweeney »

Skyfall takes an extraordinary $59.8m (£37.2m) in its first week, the biggest seven day gross in UK box office history.

Not content with the second-highest Fri-Sun opening of all time at $32.4m (£20.2m), Skyfall has continued to dominate in the UK amassing an exceptional $59.8m (£37.2m) in its first week to record the biggest-ever seven day gross at the UK box office

You sure like to rub it in, don't you?

I'm just kidding around, Sweeney. I guess Skyfall's success in the UK really isn't that surprising, since most of us saw that coming anyway.

More great news!!!!! Skyfall has broken records for popcorn sales in the UK selling 2 billion tons in 1 week beating Thunderball (although these figures are not adjusted for inflation).

They don't but they love Batman. So Eon gave them what they wanted.

I recall many here (including FBF) would claim the Nolan Batman films were the real Bond films or the better alternative. Looks like EON got one thing right for you guys, though they they seemed to have overlooked one critical element.

In many ways Nola captures some of the Bond essence I never thought his Batman was what Bond is supposed to be. Give him freedom (cast, script, all the little details) to make a Bond trilogy and I think it'd break major records.

I see where suave men of action get the comparison. Especially when Bond shed much of that persona.

I don't know why Craig had to look so damned haggard.

My wife noticed he looked very old in Skyfall, but then on the Graham Norton show he looked much younger. Maybe it was Craig with slightly longer hair (the buzzcut does him no favours), TV make-up, or Mendes actually tried to make look Craig haggard because of the film itself.

Either way, I hope his hair is longer for the next one. I never imagined Bond being a skinhead.

Having secured the biggest first week in UK box office history with $59.8m (£37.2m), Skyfall has continued to dominate the UK in its second weekend, becoming the fastest film ever to reach £50m.

The latest Bond outing has become the first film to record two consecutive £15m+ weekends after it only fell around 20% week-on-week for a $25.7m (£16.1m) second weekend. By comparison, the films it is behind on the all-time openings list – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Toy Story 3 – dropped 62% and 64% respectively.

So you and Sweeney keep saying, but Brosnan's run didn't radically redefine Bond for the benefit of people who don't like Bond films. The worst you could say about it was that it represented a fallow period, and there was no reason to suppose that future films wouldn't be better. Skyfall's success all but guarantees that Bond will remain a "gnarled. potato-faced bruiser haunted by his past" for the next 20 or 30 years, whoever plays him, and that the films will all be trying to replicate Skyfall rather than Goldfinger.

Eh, I don't think the change is so bad or too radical. Besides QOS being a misfire, I think Craig's run is very promising and Skyfall is probably the best Bond since the 60s.
