Kevin Spacey Nearly Played Bond 23 Villain

Kevin Spacey's last venture in the world of villains didn't pan out to well, as Superman Returns turned out to be somewhat underwhelming, but I'm not sure we can blame Spacey for that. But that is a discussion for another article.

In a recent talk with Spacey, he revealed that since Sam Mendes would be helming the next installment in the James Bond franchise, he was considered for the role of the main villain.
"I asked him did he want to be the Bond villain in Bond 23 as Sam Mendes was directing it. Spacey would have loved to have played the part and looks as if he would have if it had not been for Richard III. Sam Mendes is also directing that, but Spacey goes on tour with the play while Mendes goes on to direct Bond. Neither Sam or Kevin were happy about it but nothing could be done."

Spacey and Mendes previously worked together on the multi-award winning film American Beauty and have sinces worked together on other projects, including, as the article states, the current stage version of "Richard III."

I can't say that I'm upset about this. While I am a big fan of Spacey (thought he was easily the best part of Superman Returns, despite it lack-luster script), I just don't see him as a Bond villain, but who knows, they man has pulled off some great roles. Javier Bardem, who was offered the role, has yet to commit to the project

I think Kevin Spacey would make a brilliant Bond villain, but not with Craig as Bond and not with the current direction. I honestly think he dodged a bullet with this one. While I loved American Beauty that film has got absolutely NOTHING to do with Bond and the fact the director is even counting on the same actor to be the villain in the movie is far from reassuring. I honestly don't know what to wish or think at this point, I am just extremely worried for what they're releasing so far in terms of news.

So the new director is doing a play until the summer, when they should be getting started on the movie, hum.... seems like this guys time is being spread thin. Are they fimling in 2012 or 2011? I think QOS, CR DAD all did early shoots and were done by summer there maybe plenty of time

Why would any of these actors want to be in a Bond film anyway.

Turns out he was never asked. Maybe Mendes will change his mind and join Kevin when 'Richard III' goes on the road.
Kevin Spacey Won't Appear In 'James Bond 23,' But He'd Love To Show Up 'Down The Line'

Posted 3/2/11 4:20 pm ET by Josh Wigler in Interviews, Video

Contrary to some earlier rumors, Kevin Spacey won't be appearing as a villain in the "James Bond" franchise's next installment — but that doesn't mean he won't pop up eventually.

Speaking with MTV News on the red carpet at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, the two-time Oscar winner recalled the story about his near-brush with "Bond," a rumor that actually does have some truth to it.

"Actually, what happened is, I was never asked to do it," he revealed. "I was never offered it. Someone asked me if I'd like to do it, and I said I would have loved to do it, but I don't think I could have even been considered because I'm doing 'Richard III' at the same time that Sam is [shooting 'Bond 23']."

"Richard III," of course, is Spacey's forthcoming adaptation of the classic William Shakespeare play. And the Sam in question is indeed Sam Mendes, director of the next "Bond" film. So how is it that Spacey can't participate in "Bond" while his director is able to step away for it?

"He's leaving ['Richard III'] once he gets us up and running," the actor revealed. "[That's when] he starts shooting. I'm going on the road with 'Richard III,' so I couldn't have even been considered for it."

But while the touring "Richard III" is physically preventing Spacey from getting in Agent 007's way, the "Social Network" producer is certainly not ruling out an appearance at some point in the future.

"But at some point down the line? Sure," he said with an enthusiastic grin. And lord knows he'll have plenty of time to talk with Mendes about the possibility while they're working on "Richard III" together. "Exactly. I'll twist his arm about that."

As for his thoughts on the current state of the "Bond" franchise, Spacey had nothing but glowing things to say about the series and, specifically, Daniel Craig: "He's a terrific Bond and I think it's a terrific franchise. I'm glad that they've worked it all out and they're doing it again."

Uh so wait. NO Bardem and NO Spacey, and Spacey was never even asked. Finally the truth is starting to surface: which is that NOTHING has been happening at all! All smoke and no roast as we say in Italian

*that* turned out to be a load of B.S.

It is seeming less and less likely that Bond 23 will be out in 2012.

I think they will knock something out, but it'll be another half-assed job like QOS.
