Bond 24: The Hildebrand Rarity (very rough draft)

Post by Kristatos »

This is a follow up to my Risico, but isn't as well-developed in my mind, just some half-formed ideas I have knocking about. It combines elements of the titular Fleming story, the unused portions of YOLT (the novel) and Kevin McClory's ideas for Warhead (well, he won't be needing them!) The idea was that Risico would be a return to a more traditional Bond style, but a fairly low-key one in the FYEO/LTK vein, whereas The Hildebrand Rarity would be a big, mad, Lewis Gilbert-style sci-fi Bond that Sweeney will absolutely loathe (sorry, Sweenster, it's nothing personal, just a case of differing tastes).

The Background: THR takes place some years after Risico. Continuity would deliberately be left ambiguous so that it could be read as either existing in a seperate timeline from Bonds 1-20 or as occuring after the events of those films had already played out in the rebooted timeline. Barbara Mawdesley is back in post as M after her temporary demotion at the end of Risico, thus explaining how she came to be both Sir Miles Messervy's predecessor and his successor. Villiers has been promoted to the new Quartermaster after "The last chap retired in order to run a hotel in Torquay or something. Said it was something to do with the pressure of working with you, 007".

The Plot (or at least those bits of it that I've figured out): Quantum has been quiet for a long time (possibly tied to Barbara Mawdesley's absence, though I haven't quite worked out the details of the connection between them yet), but an investigation into the Illegal wildlife trade in the Seychelles turns up an apparent Quantum connection. Bond is despatched to find out more. With the aid of his friend Fidel Barbey, he finds that Hildebrand's Marlin, a seriously endangered spearfish with a deadly snout is being poached and relocated elsewhere. He tracks it down to a secret base in the Great Barrier Reef, where the head of Quantum, the mad biologist Dr. Gutrum Shatterhand (who is NOT the same person as Blofeld in this film), is creating a "garden of death" filled with the most deadly plants and animals on Earth, which Bond has to negotiate. Bond has to use all his ingenuity to destroy the command centre without releasing all these rare and deadly creatures into the local ecosystem, but Shatterhand escapes to plague Bond another day.

That's all I've got so far. More ideas as they occur to me, or feel free to chime in with suggestions.

It doesn't sound too sci-fi.

I was thinking of the "base in the Great Barrier Reef" idea (which I stole from McClory).

We could match your The Hildebrand Rarity with bits and pieces of some of my ideas to make a way to connect the two Bond Continuums.

I would use the Garden of Death Dr Shatterhand and the end of YOLT to make room for a new Bond series. Which would be better than connecting Dr No to the end of the reboot nonsense although it would be possible.

I would suggest a alteration to the end of YOLT M and Tiger hunting and finding a badly inured Bond being nursed by to health by Kissy. M understandably wants to reclaim his man but Tiger knowing the culture sees the affront to his island countrymen would feel so Tiger insists on Bond staying until he is able to leave on his own power. Mean while Kissy and Bond relationship continue as in YOLT and when Bond leave his memory is still all but gone and Kissy would be with child(Bond's child). A child perhaps Bond will never know.

From here a new Bond crafted under a male M's direction would be brought out.

But I am rambling a bit off topic.
