World Cup 2014

Post by Capt. Sir Dominic Flandry »

It's the world Cup again! In Brazil.

On the BBC red button (301 on Freeview) they are showing classic World Cup matches. Yesteday they had Spain V Northern Ireland from Spain 1982 where N. Ireland famously won.

Tonight is Holland v the Scotch from 1978.

Some interesting surprises so far. The result of this World Cup could be quite different.

I couldn't even find this thread, which is why I posted about England's defeat in Breaking News.

USA v Portugal tonight.

Oh no! I was annoyed when Portugal scored; I remember Ronaldo in 2006 against England.

What made it worse is that the BBC commentators originally said that there were 4 minutes of extra time and then corrected it to 5. If they'd been right, the USA would already be through to the next round!

Greece goes through to the next round with a last-minute penalty by Samaras.

Samaras did well to score that penalty. It could have been England v Greece in the next round!

At least I'm spared the dilemma of divided loyalties, unless they play the USA in a future match. Greece are playing Costa Rica next, so I suspect they'll have more English support than usual!

The bad news is, USA lost to Germany 0-1. The good news is, because Portugal beat Ghana 2-1, they still go through to the next round on goal difference. Their next match is against the winner of Group H (currently Belgium, but that could change with two matches left to play).

The Germany vs USA game was kind of reminiscent to Germany vs Poland in the 1974 World Cup.

Look at that pitch!

Greece and the USA are due to meet in the semi-finals....

How about a prediction for the second round?

Here are mine:

Brazil v Chile 2-1 (After Extra Time)

Colombia v Uruguay 1-1 (Colonbia win on penalties)

Netherlands v Mexico 3-1

Costa Rica v Greece 1-1 (Greece win on Penalties)

France v Nigeria 3-1

Germany v Algeria 3-0

Argentina v Switzerland 3-1

Belgium v United States 2-1 (after extra time)

I think it would be truer to say "There's a possibility of the USA and Greece meeting in the semi-finals". In truth, I can't see either team making it that far (though I'd be happy if they did - not sure which team I'd support, though).

Update: Fivethirtyeight.com gives each team only an 11% chance of reaching the semis.

I thought Greece would nick it after Costa Rica had a man sent off. But the Costa Rican penalties were good.

It's one month of Superbowls. :D This has been a good world cup - although England were useless.

Yeah, I was gutted when they failed to beat a 10-man team with an injured goalie. It's all down to the USA now for me. Can they beat the Belgian waffles?
