I know. He was only 59. We often take directors of photography for granted, but a story like this makes you appreciate how much their artistry contributes to films like the LOTR trilogy.Omega wrote:d**nKristatos wrote:RIP to Peter Jackson's regular cinematographer Andrew Lesnie: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/a ... ngs-791929

And Keith Harris too. I remember seeing him in panto when I was a kid - he must have been quite young at the time if he was only 67 (20 years older than me).

Re: Breaking News Thread
About Baltimore the city basically surrendered to the rioters. It's not even about the man the police killed.
Imo Problem with the police is they were militarized. Part of it is to get a level of professionalism and unbiased actions the military have. Problem with that is cops are not screened the same way the military is.
U.S. Military can pick up some of the worst people on the planet safely and unharmed. Local pd swat get angry raid buildings early to arrest / stop stupid drunk and stoned people who hold up in their trailers who would have surrendered as soon as they sobered up.
Patrol cops are not as trained as swat, and are taught military tactics, holds and equipment. They over react to small problems escalating situations.
If the police are militarized then the military should train and sort out personnel placements. Putting people on point who have the right temperament.
Other problem is too many cops are military rejects who turn to the police as an alternative career.
Cops have a tough job that normally the military does not have to deal with but the rigorous training the military undergoes make the difference when the stress of a bad situation hits.

Re: Breaking News Thread
Big news a few weeks ago army SF killed a major ISIS player. Thing is where he was killed in Syria, OK he was a bad guy who got what he deserved, I can't help but feel he was snuffed on request from Iran.
Iran is about the thrown that region into WW3 and it seems like the US government can't help them fast enough.

Happy 102nd birthday to the late, great Peter Cushing. I'm not sure if it was today or yesterday, but I wanted to commemorate him anyway. A great screen presence and, by all accounts, a thoroughly nice man.

A nice man? After he ordered princess Leia tortured?! I remember him from B movies most of all. I think of him and Christopher Lee.Kristatos wrote:Happy 102nd birthday to the late, great Peter Cushing. I'm not sure if it was today or yesterday, but I wanted to commemorate him anyway. It's like his dark side was entirely channeled into his acting roles. In real life, no-one seemed to have a bad word to say about him.Goldeneye wrote:A nice man? Same could be said of the rape scene in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. Cushing hated the scene, which was shoved into the film by the then Hammer Studio head, Cushing even apologised to co-star Veronica Carlson. The man was a true gent.Kristatos wrote:It's like his dark side was entirely channeled into his acting roles. Happy 102nd birthday. Wherever he is, I trust he is joined by friend and fellow horror legend Vincent Price.
Re: Breaking News Thread
I believe everyone involved with the film hated that scene, but it was imposed from above by a producer who refused to budge. It was the "I'll buy you a delicatessen in stainless steel" of the Hammer horror franchise.Daltonite Toothpaste wrote:Same could be said of the rape scene in Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed. James Carreras was the studio head, who made the scene be filmed because in his view, the film lacked sex. It's a Frankenstein film, not a porno.Kristatos wrote:I believe everyone involved with the film hated that scene, but it was imposed from above by a producer who refused to budge. Well, not only that, but when meddling execs order a film to be "sexed up", that doesn't usually mean a brutal rape.Daltonite Toothpaste wrote:

It's been rather overshadowed by the death of Sir Christopher Lee, but Ron Moody has entered the noetic realm*.

Re: Breaking News Thread
About the confederate flag controversy. Probably belongs in politics, but I just wanted to say I do get why people have a bad reaction to it because of racist who adopted the flag. I understand how the history of slavery in the south lends itself to this.
However to me and other southerners it never represented this. It was a rebellion against the federal government, the flag and "heroes" of the war were the anti establishment heroes. The southern identity was conquered people who took pride in their culture and way of life. Often looked down on by the north.
I knew black people growing up who thought the Confederate flag was their flag because we were all southerners first.
I would also put Robert E Lee against any of the northern generals. So of whom committed war crimes on the south before the end of the war and most of the soldier went on to practice genocide against the Indians.
The south's history of race relation is deplorable, nothing to be proud of there. Oddly it was the democrat party behind most of this, somehow that is forgotten. It was the federal government the legalised racism in the early 20th century, good democrat sheriffs and governors making it happen in the states.. This was not limited to the south either. Some of the practices highlighted in the south were nation wide
But I'd argue that if the confederate flag and monuments to southern herons are to be torn down then the US flag and monuments need to be torn down first. After all the sins of the union far out weight the short live confederacy. The jackasses using the flag for racism are not confederates, I doubt they are even human.
I might have more to say on this later if anyone care to talk about it.
