Pope Frank(that's my nickname for him!) seems like much more of a man of the people than Benedict-his choice of a name-Francis-is interesting. I've always loved St. Francis so that gets a  from me.

The new Archbishop of Canterbury was enthroned today:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21875199
The Most Reverend Justin Welby has been enthroned as Archbishop of Canterbury.

The 57-year-old was formally sworn in as head of the Church of England and spiritual leader of the 77 million-strong Anglican global communion.

In his first sermon, he said: "There is every possible reason for optimism about the future of Christian faith in our world and in this country."

Prime Minister David Cameron and the Prince of Wales were among the 2,000 guests at Canterbury Cathedral.............
Also RIP Norman Collier and Frank Thornton - Are You Being Served's Captain Peacock. I hope the microphones work at Norman's funeral service.

RIP Richard Griffiths - Uncle Monty in Withnail & I and Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter films. There must be something about him that says "wicked uncle", though I'm sure he was a lovely man in real life.

She and Jim Henson met in a University of Maryland puppetry class in the mid-1950s, and they became creative and business partners in the development of the Muppets.

The Hensons married in 1959 and had five children: Lisa, Cheryl, Brian, John and Heather. The pair separated in 1986, and Jim Henson died in 1990.

He'd been ill for a long time, though, so while the news is sad, it doesn't come as a total surprise.

Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female PM, dead at 87

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/08/world/eur ... ?hpt=hp_t1
London (CNN) -- Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a towering figure in postwar British and world politics and the only woman to become British prime minister, has died at the age of 87.

She suffered a stroke Monday, her spokeswoman said.

Thatcher's funeral will be at St. Paul's Cathedral, with full military honors, followed by a private cremation, the British prime minister's office announced.

Thatcher served from 1975 to 1990 as leader of the Conservative Party. She was called the "Iron Lady" for her personal and political toughness.

She retired from public life after a stroke in 2002 and suffered several strokes after that.

She made few public appearances in her final months, missing a reception marking her 85th birthday hosted by Prime Minister David Cameron in October 2010. She also skipped the July 2011 unveiling of a statue honoring her old friend Ronald Reagan in London.

In December 2012, she was hospitalized after a procedure to remove a growth in her bladder.

'Mickey Mouse Club' original Annette Funicello dies
http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/08/showbiz/a ... index.html
(CNN) -- Annette Funicello, one of the best-known members of the original 1950s "Mickey Mouse Club" and a star of numerous 1960s "beach party" films, died Monday at a California hospital of complications from multiple sclerosis, the Walt Disney Co. said.

Funicello was just 12 when she was selected by Walt Disney himself to be one of the original Mouseketeers of the "Mickey Mouse Club," the 1950s television variety show aimed at children.

Funicello, who had a background in dance, quickly became one of the most popular Mouseketeers.

I think I remember Margaret Thatcher - wasn't she a Fascist dictator in Britain in the 1980s?

No I have not seen it yet; there are a few other good dramas too.

I also think it's strange that I always call her Mrs Thatcher!

We had police round our way last night to break up a street party not far from where I live. I was no fan of Thatcher, but holding a party to celebrate someone's death is just ghoulish.
