I'm not sure what survivalists use for water when there is no well nearby. In The Good Life they paid water rates to get tap water!

They weren't really self-sufficient in that case, since they relied on the water company to supply them.

Probably not a good idea to use the, erm, stuff from the toilet. It'd be a better idea to use actual compost(made out of organic stuff like coffee grounds, etc.)

On the subject of water and living off the grid, what do the self-sufficient folks use for drinking/washing/cooking etc. if they don't happen to have a well or spring on their property? Anyone know?

Depending on where you live, a filter of some sort is a good idea,since the water can become infected with impurities.
