There used to be a 5-year maximum, and the party in power could call an election at any time within those 5 years, usually at a time when the polls were in their favour. But after the last election, the rules were changed to fixed-term elections, like the USA, but with a 5-year term instead of 4.

5 years terms are a bit silly. It should be four, or three like Australia.

I think the Union flag should continue as it will annnoy the Scotch. The Union flag was created because union of the crowns of England and Scotland which was before the political union of Engand and Wales. The Queen will still be the Queen of England and Scotland so it could be kept. The St. David's cross colours of black and yellow could be incorporated but perhaps it would be more fun to have a competition to have a new flag. Although there is always the danger that we will end up with a flag like South Africa's which is based on Nelson Mandela's underpants.

How about the UK is renamed England and this becomes the flag:

I've read a little more about this referendum.

It seems a lot of things haven't been thought about and it seems they tilted that game to help the yes vote. I've read a there are Scotts angry they can't vote in it because they live out of country and less than 50% of the country votes it still counts.
I noticed they are trying technique the obama administration tired here to support Obamacare which really didn't work, getting the young to try to talk about how great voting yes is, the getting granny to vote yes campaign. :|

What are they going to do about pensions? I assume it be like here were all working age people contribute, so all of Scotland would be pulling out of a pension system they've been putting money into for years. A good deal for the rest of England they get to keep the contributions and no longer have to payout.

I thought they tried a similar referendum not too long ago, I thought Connery was campaigning for it.

Well Judi Dench say they should vote no, she's practically the queen so they have to listen, right? :)

I think the Scots are more likely to listen to Sir Sean than Dame Judi. Connery has almost godlike status in Scotland, despite having fucked off to Spain decades ago to get out of paying taxes.

Amazing vote. I think the yes crowd hurt themselves by limiting participation, the amount they lost by is a counting error here  . If all the citizens had a vote all over the world it might be closer. Still the I'm glad yes lost because I don't think they had a plan for pensions and healthcare also they were using the Obama strategy of promising the moon with no way of delivering. I wouldn't be surprised if the Obama campaign had a hand in the yes campaign Clinton got involved in the Israeli election during his time. And Obama doesn't like the English for some supposed transgression against his family in Kenya.

Are the promises the No campaign made being honored?

Of course not. The polls had barely closed before the London politicians were saying "Ha ha, we had our fingers crossed behind our backs!" For those voters who voted no based on those promises, I've some beachfront property in Lanarkshire I'd like to sell them.

That's what I figured would happen. Sort of why I hoped YES might win just to throw the government who took them for granted on their asses. But then I'm not sure YES had any real plan for taking up the responsibility the current government held. If they had voted for Independence then chose to remain as part of the commonwealth to keep essential services uninterrupted, essentially outsourcing the job to England. It might have worked.

Although if they could of made Scotland one of those weird tax dodge countries maybe Connery would move back ;)

But the YES vote has lit the fire of independence in a lot of camps I think we will see a lot of this in the future.
