Blond = Ugly?

Post by Capt. Sir Dominic Flandry »

Is "blond" a media codeword for "ugly". Articles about Daniel Craig always say that some people opposed his casting because he was short, not suave and "blond" *and that everyone loved him after Casino Royale - the greatest movie ever made etc etc etc).

No, it's just a way of minimising our objections to Craig. According to the media narrative, we shallow fools are unable to see beyond his hair colour, while clever people who talk loudly in restaurants (to steal a line from Monty Python) can ignore such superficial cosiderations and see Craggy's true acting genius, or something.

There is a thread on Commander discussing the possibility of a black actor playing Bond. A moderator said that if there was black actor playing Bond a protest site would be set up, similar to the CraignotBond which was set up to "oppose a blond actor playing Bond". :roll:

What these so-called Bond fans fail to realize (or perhaps some do and just don't care) is that a black actor playing Bond will open up a big can of worms. If Bond becomes black it won't stop there, people will then want an Asian Bond, Indian Bond, female Bond, the list goes on. The character would have no clear identity, and the series would be in an anything goes free-for-all mess. How would they explain such changes? That stupid code name theory? Considering how pretty much everyone and their grandmother loves to hate on the 1967 Casino Royale so much, its ridiculous code name concept is frequently used as a lame defence as to why anyone can play Bond. And this is just one of the various issues people on this site are concerned about, which is much deeper than Craig's d*mn hair colour.

I never had a problem with Craig's hair colour (if Rupert Penry-Jones was in with a shot at the role, i'd give him a chance). My problem is with Craig being such a dreary, monotonous actor, imho. And, to be fair, it's not just Craig, but his era as a whole. It's so far away from what I want from Bond, the films are now so overwrought with drama, and they're centered around some generic action hero.

Are you a fan of the 1967 Casino Royale? It's fun but such a waste of talent.

I'll take its wackiness over Craig's boredom anytime, but no, I can't say that I'm a fan of the film. I kind of like the way it ends, though. The 2006 version should have had a similar ending. :wink:

Or the 1967 CR could have had Peter Selllers in zombie make up, an ill-fitting suit and a large machine gun mumbling "Bond, James Bond" at the end. :wink:

I have to say I agree with you completely on this. I also want to add Craig is just not that good looking regardless of hair color. I remember a lot of talk about how he supposedly looked like Steve McQueen when he first took over as Bond. I never thought so I thought he looked more like Tom Berenger, of course that was before he aged 60 years in as many months.

Peter Seller's CR had some fun bits -- Miss Goodthighs, a gay Q, and a contest to find the next Bond: the finalists have to kiss a girl.

The Peter Sellers CR has some fun bits ... with Miss Goodthighs, a gay Q and a contest to find the newest Bond, where they kiss a girl. One or two of them resemble Lazenby.
