I would argue that Craig's Bond is a completely new character, which is why some who loved the old series are so disgruntled.

They came up with a new bio for Craig's Bond to fit his age, etc.

So would the rest of his predecessors (including Connery) had they not felt the midas touch of Bond. Woulda shoulda coulda isn't gonna change that Craig is on that list nor is it going to change his popularity as James Bond.
Well said stocks. It's one of those things that seem to be completely forgotten around here, all to often.
In my mind the changes to the series with the inclusion of Daniel Craig, are not as big as some people see them.

Connery, Lazenby and in many ways Dalton were all unknowns before Bond. Moore and Brosnan were the only household names, with Brosnan being more widely known in the US than Europe.
What really striked me as odd, is the fact that Daniel Craig really got his big break being cast as Bond. And that many of you cling to that as if it's wrong.
Yeah you may dislike the casting choice, but the fact that he got his break, just as many of the others seems to be a weak argument.
Just my take on it.

Connery,Lazenby and Dalton weren't making enough bad movies to fill a shelf at the local Blockbuster before they became Bond.

Connery had a few films behind him when he became Bond. Though it was Bond that catapulted him into the mainstream.
Dalton however had made many films before he became Bond, as far back as the sixties. He just hadn't made many films that mainstream audiences had seen.

Connery and Dalton didn't make a ton of crappy, pretty much straight to video movies unlike, say, Craig :?...

The Invasion was a especially memorable flop. They changed the release date of it what, like 3 or 4 times, to say nothing of directors, FCOL! The reviews were less than stellar. I think they were hinging on the crapness factor of the movie being helped by the fact that Daniel Craig was in it. FAIL on all accounts.
