It didn't take Daniel long, however, to prove all his doubters wrong as his intense, brooding reinvention of 007 in Casino Royale had film fans calling him 'The Best Bond Since Connery'. With his second spy adventure Quantum Of Solace on the horizon, we present ten pieces of trivia about the sixth man to suit up in James Bond's tuxedo.

1. Born in 1968 to art teacher Olivia and Merchant Navy midshipman Timothy, Daniel is the first Bond actor who is younger than the franchise. The film series debuted six years earlier with 1962's Dr. No.

2. Daniel moved away from his Merseyside home at the age of 16 to pursue his acting dream in London. His fellow students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama included one-time Bond candidate Ewan McGregor and Joseph Fiennes.

3. Daniel is a long-standing fan of Liverpool Football Club.

4. Daniel faced stiff competition for the role of James Bond. He auditioned against ER's Goran Visnjic, Keira Knightley's boyfriend Rupert Friend and Tudors star Henry Cavill to win the part.

5. Daniel has proven to be as smooth an operator in real life as his onscreen alter egos, with his list of exes thought to include Sienna Miller and Kate Moss.

6. Daniel was married to actress Fiona Loudon for two years in the early '90s and the couple have a daughter together. He is currently dating film producer Satsuki Mitchell.

7. As big a hit with men as he is with women, Daniel topped a poll earlier this year asking gay men who their ideal date would be.

8. Sean Connery is Daniel's favourite Bond. "He did something extraordinary with that role," Daniel says. "He was bad, sexy, animalistic and stylish, and it is because of him I am here today."

9. Daniel appears to make career choices based on his interest. He took on a role in Tomb Raider because he is a fan of the game, and voiced his admiration for Philip Pullman's work to producers to get a part in The Golden Compass.

10. Daniel admits to having a bit of a thing for his Invasion and Golden Compass co-star Nicole Kidman. "She turns me on. Not in a sordid, horrible way. Well, come to think of it... " Watch out Keith Urban!

Judging by the BO takings of both his films, and the rave reviews CR got, I'd say the above comment is fairly accurate, regardless of what you or I think of him.

No one had to, it was already public knowledge. On several behind-the-scenes docs for James Bond, there were clips of Connery on set without his toupee. Here's a shot of Connery on the set of You Only Live Twice, balding.
