I doubt it. I'm surprised it got made at all, given that the first one didn't do great at the box office, but I suppose Guillermo Del Toro is hot right now (even though he didn't direct this one).

Will pacific rim find a big enough audience to justify the sequel?

It will be interesting to see if the years working on the sequel will actually make for a good movie.

Black Panther was pushed from the top of the chart after six weeks in theaters. The victor was Pacific Rim Uprising, which came in at the higher end of expectations with an estimated $28 million for Universal in its opening frame. The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi/actioner is more or less designed for overseas audiences, so Uprising‘s domestic take isn’t necessarily make-or-break. That said, this is significantly lower than the first film’s $37.3 million opening, and it will almost certainly be well short of the original’s $101 million take in North America. Internationally, the first Pacific Rim took in over $300 million, accounting for roughly three-quarters of its $400 million-plus global total. Uprising is looking at a similar trajectory. As anticipated, Pacific Rim Uprising did most of its business internationally this weekend, with the monsters vs. robots tentpole opening to an estimated $150.5 million overseas. That amount includes a sizzling $65 million in China – a 40 percent increase over the first installment, which debuted to $45 million there. Opening at No. 1 in 30 markets, it also grossed an estimated $6.8 million in both Korea and Russia. Hong Kong is up next weekend, followed by a release in Japan on April 13.

A few reviews I've seen of PR:U say that it focuses quite heavily on its Chinese characters, and that there are whole scenes in Chinese with English subtitles. They know which side their bread is buttered.

I’m not surprised Star Wars , marvel and bond tailor their story and casting to please the Chinese government

As long as the story is good in pacific rim I dont care about subtitles

I think it's more to please the Chinese audience, though I suppose they have to please the government to be allowed to show it to an audience.

this maybe true, except the Chinese government is extremely racist, most Asian counties are so maybe this reflects the Chinese people feelings. In China if you’re not han Chinese you are nothing, the government literally populate non han areas with han Chinese to eventually eradicate the other populations over time.

I’m bothered by good liberal progressives quickly bending over for totalitarian governments all over the world for the sake of money and the mistaken belief the USA is the problem and other cultures have to be revered. But honestly they pretend to have moral reasons for giving in to these governments but the motivation is really just Money, the same reason people tired a blind eye to so many social ills before.

The movie business is just that, a business. The shareholders at Disney or Sony don't much care about human rights when there's money to be made.

true it’s a business but Babs will get up on stage to accept awards for humanitarian of the year as if she single handedly made a difference
