Lazenby mentioned in celeb book

Post by commander0077again »

The George is featured in two chapters of a celeb meets celeb book, Hello, Goodbye, Hello. Other famous peeps include Adolph Hitler just before becoming chancellor, and a spoiled heir to some British fortune bumped Hitler with his car. Hitler was nice about it, and just brushed the incident off. The driver's host said, "Did you know who that was?" Years later, the guy mused, "For an instant I had the fate of the world in my hands. What would've happened if I had killed Hitler?" (He had been only driving very slowly).
On Lazenby, the first chapter includes on how Broccoli was impressed with the fellow sitting in the other barber chair in 1965. He was reflecting, This guy could play Bond. He also assumed Lazenby was wealthy, because the barber was an exclusive place. Cutting to Lazenby, he said he planned it that way. After Broccoli returned to his office, he called the barber and asked for Lazenby's particulars. So a couple of years later, he remembered Lazenby (of course I assume he was doing TV commercials, so possibly Broccoli and Saltzguy knew he from there), and asked him in for an interview. The two producers were both impressed as they watched the George walk across the street. He was wearing a Savile Row suit and a Rolex Submariner. When they asked him to do a screen test, he insisted on being paid.
The rest is, etc. Lazenby soon burned bridges on the shooting of OHMSS; on TV he mentioned that he was retiring from James Bond (the audience first thought he was joking). In the last part of the chapter, Lazenby kicked himself for being an idiot, he admitted it was mostly his fault for turning down Bond, although his agent didn't escape. In the next chapter, where he appears on British TV, Lazenby shocked everyone by blurting, "So and so senators (he named names) were in the group that killed President Kennedy."

Another interesting story, not Bond-related, is that in a Hollywood restaurant, Alec Guiness had a premonition about James Dean, after Dean showed Guiness his new Porsche parked outside. "Obi Wan" seemed to have ESP in some cases. He had a very bad feeling, and told Dean, Please don't drive this car. This was one week before Dean died.
You move very well for a dead man, Mister Bond

Kill him!
Kill Bond! Now!!!

Obi-Wan was truly gifted in foresight!
"Dalton makes an effective Bond - lacking Sean Connery's grace and humor, and Roger Moore's suave self-mockery, but with a lean tension and a toughness that is possibly more contemporary" - Roger Ebert
