As British spy James Bond, Pierce Brosnan battled many fictional bad guys – but now the actor is fighting for a good cause: He wants to help save the whales.

In a new PSA for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Brosnan directly addresses President Barack Obama, telling him that "whales face more threats today than ever before" from everything from pollution to professional whalers to climate change.

"As a candidate you promised to end illegal whaling, and we applauded your leadership," says Brosnan. "But recent reports reveal your administration supports an international proposal, which gives Japan, Iceland and Norway the license to kill whales."

The actor then asks the president promise to protect the whales.

Later this month, the International Whaling Commission is scheduled to vote on a proposal that could allow commercial whaling with certain restrictions.

When reached by PEOPLE, the White House said, "When it comes to international whaling, the goal of the Obama Administration is toconserve whales. The Administration reaffirms its unwavering support for the commercial whaling moratorium and believes that lethal scientific whaling is unnecessary in modern whale conservation management."
According to People Magazine, in the PSA, Brosnan says: "Whales face more threats today than ever before."

He addresses Obama and says: "As a candidate you promised to end illegal whaling, and we applauded your leadership. But recent reports reveal your administration supports an international proposal, which gives Japan, Iceland and Norway the license to kill whales."

As a caring for the environment, perhaps Pierce should do an action movie, dealing with environmental issue. 8)

I dunno, such movies have a history of sucking. It's rarely a good idea to let stars make movies in order to promote their pet causes, however worthy those causes are. Look at John Travolta's pro-Scientology propaganda films like Phenomenon and, of course, Battlefield Earth. Or anything Kevin Costner did after Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

I was going to say that!!! But maybe is a cult film now as it is very funny, especially Michael Caine's strange role.

These whalers should watch Star Trek IV.

Secret Weapons: James Bond, the Whales and the White House

Amidst the worst environmental tragedy for the US, there is another sleeping giant that is being awakened by those great liberal hearted Hollywood folks. And thank goodness because someone has to help the White House get some good environmental press. Enter stage right -- Pierce Brosnan aka 007. He, in concert with his environmental warrior wife Keely, is leading the charge to save the whales now. Dovetailing on his celebrity - this group is lobbying hard for the White House's attention now before the moratorium on commercial whaling is lifted later this month.

It is preposterous that the White House wandered into these waters after the President's pledge to the environmental community. What were they thinking? Every US President since Regan has upheld the standards banning commercial whaling. Please let's not reward the bad behavior of countries like Japan, Norway and Iceland for violating international law.

Thank goodness these folks are here at the right moment in time. This campaign, www.SaveTheWhalesNow.org is a blessing. First and foremost it will prevent the further endangerment of the whales of our universe. White House; these folks may be your secret weapon -- the Humane Society, the NRDC and of course 007 and Keely - are giving you a gift that can keep on giving complete with gift wrap.

Mr. President - sir, you need the environmental community now more then ever; and the environmental community needs you. There are bad things happening with Big Oil that are not your doing. We know that these wheels have been turning for a long time. The goop just keeps falling on your lap. So let's not let the whales be sacrificed amidst all the confusion and commotion. Please pay attention. We need you and you need us.

So listen up folks that are reading, support this effort to save the whales now, and give a lot of love to the whales and little to the Obama Administration. Go to their website, www.savethewhalesnow.org. Download that gem of a video. Sign their petition and call the White House, tell your Congressional member and don't be distracted by the mid term elections tomorrow. Vote, but remember the whales. They are counting on you. And the White House could sure use a little love. So let's give it to them.

Please check out the pearltree below for the URL's to the video, the online petition and background materials concerning the launch of this campaign.
