Ray Winstone to star in movie remake of The Sweeney?

Reports have come through that a movie remake of the awesome 1970’s British cop show “The Sweeney” is in the works. The unstoppable Ray Winstone is expected to play Jack Regan, who in the television show was played by the late John Thaw.

In the 70’s The Sweeney had a shocking amount of grit, profanity and violence but I’m sure there will be even more in a film adaptation. In the show, the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad tackle the worst organised crime across London - and annoying a whole load of people in the process.

Original Series creators Ian Kennedy Martin is said to have written the script and Nick Love (Football Factory, The business) is attached to direct.

Maybe this would be better suited for telly.

Well, there have already been two Sweeney movies back in the 70s.

Yes I know they made two cinema films - as they loved to do with British television programmes in the 70's.

A new cinema version of the Sweeney would be great, especially with Winstone. It would also work as a two hour TV programme (or one and a half with the ads).
