Moonraker 1955
Moonraker 1955
"At M's request, Bond has gone up against Sir Hugo Drax at the card table, on a mission to teach the millionaire and head of the Moonraker project a lesson he won't forget, and prevent a scandal engulfing Britain's latest defence system. But there is more to the mysterious Drax than simply cheating at cards. And once Bond delves deeper into goings-on at the Moonraker base he discovers that both the project and its leader are something other than they pretend to be..."
Re: Moonraker 1955
I've just finished reading this for, I'm ashamed to say, the first time. Don't have time to write a full review right now, but one thing bugs me - who was the guy in the Alfa Romeo? He just seems to appear out of nowhere and then crash. Did I miss something?

I think it was there to demonstrate what a blackguard Drax was, like cheating in cards at Blades. Ian was a car nut adding a chase scene the guys Top Gear guys would enjoy was a personal perk for him.
Too bad Bond stopped being a car aficionado, of course with Daniel at the helm he would run the Alfa off the road himself.

Hugo forced the boy racer off the road because he is insane!

The way it was written made it sound initially as if we were supposed to know who was driving the Alfa. That's what confused me.

The part of this novel I appreciate most is that it gives us a lot of insight into what Bond's everyday life in London and working at MI6 is like. The story was very original and the twist over Drax's real identity was quite clever. Way better than the movie that's for sure.
"Dalton makes an effective Bond - lacking Sean Connery's grace and humor, and Roger Moore's suave self-mockery, but with a lean tension and a toughness that is possibly more contemporary" - Roger Ebert
