Raymond Benson's Ten minus zero is a bit lame compared to IF.
He lifts quotes right from CR to describe JB. -mahjong was the game of choice. -the entire plot revolved around the hand over Hong Kong to China.
His first stab at the JB book was decent -not great. -Decent read for a rainy day.
Once again Jb goes out of his way to rescue the girl -Sunni Pei-
Jb always has a soft spot of the ladys -IMO he's not the misogynist the Broccolis try to make him look.

Colonel Sun is the only one I've read, which I thought was very good, and it was almost Fleming.Capt. Sir Dominic Flandry wrote:I think Colonel Sun is the best one. I've read a couple of John Gardener books and I'd describe them as mildly entertaining potboilers.
I tried a couple of Bensons, and struggled after a few chapters. I also attempted a couple of Gardners and couldn't bring myself to finish them either.
I recommend Christopher Wood's novelisation of TSWLM and MR though, as he wrote them very much in the style of Fleming. I started reading one of them a while back, and was quite impressed......I must pick it up again soon to finish it.

I used to have a old hardback copy of DAF, the movie cover with Connery. Come to think of it I still might.

And why his novels were so much better than his screenplays. I seem to remember the novelisation of Moonraker being much less slapstick than the film. Did Talbot Rothwell do an uncredited script polish or something?Commander 0077 wrote:Yes, the Chris Wood books are very sound, with lots of Flemingisms. Wonder why he wasn't given the job of penning other Bonds?
