Young Bond Books

Post by CaptainLewis »

Written by Charlie Higson, It details the early life of James Bond in the 1930's. Five books have been written: SilverFin, Blood Fever, Double or Die, Hurricane Gold and By Royal Command. Have any of you read them, I think they are a good read.

I haven't read any of them. How do they compare with Fleming's writings?

Only read the first two Young Bond books and they're pretty good.

Someone elsewhere posted pictures of the new U.S. paperback Young Bond covers and quite frankly they're a bit naff.

Not *real* young kids..I'd say they're OK for 10 and up.

I agree with the Dr: I thought they were for youngsters and would not be that entertaining. Perhaps I should read one!

Would you like to see them made into movies Captain Lewis?

I would enjoy seeing it, but I suppose they would edit the bulk of the book.

The Harry Potter books are for kids, but adults can enjoy them too. I haven't read any of the Young Bond books, but from what I've heard, they're the same way.

HP seems more popular than Young Bond.

There was a pretty big wait for the books here in the States. They came out here a *long* time after they did in the UK.

Read part of Hurricane Gold at Barnes and Noble today(it's only just come out in the States apparently).More of the same-and James Bond isn't in the book until 20 plus pages in

For the past three months, I've just discovered these books. Read the first three, and give them high ratings. They're better than the adult Bond adaptions, so that's saying plenty, O'. Coming in, I thought they would be typical kid/harrypots stuff, but James meets bigger than life villains, and there is real violence. Of course, we get to see the formation of his character at Eton; his aunt who happens to own a Bentley; the origin of his Bentley. The author throws several Flemingisms in the mix, even 'the sweat and smell of the casino' translates into the sweat and smell of Eton :D ... I am wondering if he could do such a good job with adult Bond; but maybe that would spoil the effect. But judging from these books, he has the touch. One scene has him ten years later, so he's in his mid-twenties and he's already Commander Bond, and he drives the Bentley for the first time (in the books) ... so I suppose he could do a more than fair job with contemporary Bond.

Never considered this series I might have to take a chance on them after reading this review

Just looked on Amazon, average 4 out of 5 stars for Silverfin -- like the other two books I've read, features an excellent bigger than life villain, almost a 'perfect physical specimen with gleaming white teeth' whose son is a bully at Eton. Guess who he bullies? :martini: In the next few weeks plan to read the 4th book. The 5 star review leading Amazon agrees with me that the target audience should not really be early teens, but Bond fans of all ages. Its violence and gore in fact is not generally suitable for very young readers. I laughed when the reviewer writes he doesn't read much but he really liked reading Silverfin.
