'Golden Compass' = 2007's Bigger Bombs

Post by Mazer Rackham »

Craig's new movie opens at number 1 and is considered a huge disappointment.

Once again Kidman + Craig stink at the box office.

$8.6 million from 3,528 theaters with anemic per screen average. Weekend estimate is $26 million. Cost of movie: $200+ million (amid reports that director Chris Weitz confirmed the budget soared to $250 mil). This flop should sink New Line Cinema chairman Bob Shaye's chances to stay on when his contract expires in 2008...

I don't think Nicole should appear with any more films with Daniel Craig...

By now, Bob Shayne must be kissing Peter Jackson's ass. That's the only option for him.

I'm not going to say it was Craigs fault, cause from what I've heard he isn't in the moive from more than a few minutes.

They used the hell out of his image to promote the film and that's not going to change the fact it a bad movie. And a stupid time of year to release a movie like that one.
Funny but I am legend did the number GC wanted and from what I heard it sucks  I guess Will Smith does have a BO draw beyond the fresh prince

Chief of Staff, 007's gone round the bend. Says someone's been trying to feed him a poisoned banana. Fellow's lost his nerve. Been in the hospital too long. Better call him home.

Craig was prominent in the UK poster. Maybe they thought he would be a draw in the UK after Royale's UK success.

As much as The Golden Compass stunk up the US box office, it pulled in quite a bit of money internationally ($233 million, to be precise), which brings it's total up to $300 million worldwide. It's not going to recoup it's costs (it would need more than $360 million to do that), but it certainly picked up the slack from the US.

If anything, it shows that the fantasy genre has performed much better overseas that it has domestically over the past few years or so. Even the blockbuster LOTR pictures did substantially better overseas.
Wait, I like Daniel Craig. And I like Casino Royale. What am I doing here?

This may be a bit off-topic, but Tubes is quite welcome to join this forum and debate here rather than attack us from the safety of another forum.

I think onlythe intellegent pro-Craig people like The Sweeney can hold their own here.
