Next 'Spider-Man' film will be a gritty, contemporary reboot of the franchise
by Nicole Sperling

The next Spider-Man film will be a reboot of the franchise, not a continuation of series Sam Raimi created back in 2002 — in a move similar to Batman Begins restarting the Batman franchise seven years after Batman and Robin underwhelmed fans and critics.

This time around, the series will place Peter Parker in a more contemporary setting, as a teenager battling today’s issues. The decision to go with an origin story stemmed from Sony developing two Spidey projects simultaneously. According to studio insiders, Sony was working on both Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 and the new origin story from James Vanderbilt, who wrote Zodiac. The original plan was to keep the Spider-Man gang together for one last film in 2011 before rebooting the series in 2012. When it became clear that Raimi would not be able to make the summer 2011 release date planned for Spider-Man 4, the studio opted to scrap Spider-Man 4 altogether, and focus solely on the series reboot.

Who will helm the new film is anyone’s guess but with the studio interested in a more gritty, contemporary redo of the series, they are certainly focused on younger directors making waves in Hollywood. One name that has popped up is Marc Webb, the man behind (500) Day of Summer. He was previously in discussions with the studio to take over Moneyball, but that job went to Bennett Miller. Michael Bay has also previously expressed interest in taking over the Spider-Man franchise and Seabiscuit director Gary Ross worked on one of the drafts of Spider-Man 4 and is said to be a huge fan of the comic book series.
I don't like the sound of this.

It's a waste of time and COMPLETELY uninspiring to reboot Spidey and make him a kid again. If Raimi and Tobey are out then the series should be put to rest.

Thoughts anyone?

I don't know about you, but I think a Spidey reboot is BIG WASTE of time. It's time to let other Marvel superheroes to take up the mantle.

Can you say "lack of originality?" I can. The Spidey reboot is going to be lame with a capital L.

the spiderman 3 team being canned isn't a bad thing IMHO. Better than they deserve.

Maguire was decent as peter parker/spidy but wasn't all that great. The stories were rush and bypassed some major spiderman story points. Spiderman 1 &2 were great movies and the 3rd was a wast of time. it seems tis is what happens when actors think about themselves over the role and story. Maguire was all about himself in teh last one and the emotions he wanted adn not what spiderman needed, which is what craig does IMHO. What was said about spidy 4 seems to be more of the same crap that ruined spidy 3.

Maguire screwed up by being such a primadonna. Replacing him wouldn't be a problem, Sam Rami is a loss I think. Rebooting it is too soon and unnecessary, Its not been 10 years since the first spiderman set the stage in wonderful way, keep it and just make more stories and don't worry about it. the high school reboot idea is a very bad one. Can Hollywood no longer make good stories, does everything need to be a gimmick?

I saw something about Robert Pattinson, which would be wrong, a emo spidy, a high school drama spidy would suck. Spiderman didn't spend all that much time high school.

Another Spiderman similar to the first three with a different director and cast would be preferable. Perhaps someone has done some market research and decided the reboot would be great idea.

Does every recasting of a major role now require a reboot? The pre-Craig Bond series and the Burton/Schumacher Batman franchise survived multiple recastings without having to reboot every time, as did a host of earlier film series such as Tarzan, The Saint (the '30s and '40s RKO movies rather than the later TV series), The Falcon and so on.

OK, perhaps Batman was a bad example, since the reboot was necessary - not only was it a dead franchise, but the reboot undid one of the worst creative decisions of Burton's first film; namely making the Joker, rather than some random mugger, the guy who killed Bruce Wayne's parents, thus reducing Batman's psychological motivation to that of simple personal revenge (and giving him no reason to even exist in the subsequent films). But I still stand by my point that it is possible to recast a major role without rebooting a film series.

It would be interesting to see how successful Bourne film without Damon would be. They will probably reboot Bourne too and have a young David Webb on his first mission.
Bring back Bond!
