Introducing my 007-part passion project: Battle of the Bonds

Post by avl_bmb »

I’ve recently kicked off a passion project that’s bounced around my head for years. I’ve called it Battle of the Bonds and in it, I dive deep into each Bond actor, their films, and their legacies as the world’s favorite super spy.

By the end of this celebratory series, you’ll know who my favorite Bond is, who I believe the best Bond to be, and, more importantly, why each Bond has played a critical role in ensuring our beloved franchise is here to stay. I hope you enjoy. Cheers!

Battle of the Bonds // Part 000 // Mission Briefing

Part 001 // Sean Connery

Part 002 // George Lazenby

Part 003 // Roger Moore

Part 004 // Timothy Dalton

Part 005 // Pierce Brosnan

Part 006 // Daniel Craig

Part 007 // Mission Report

I have a complicated relationship with Pierce Brosnan.
🍸
I'm a child of the 90s and Brosnan was the first Bond I saw in theaters, so you might think I look back on his era fondly...but I simply don't.
🍸
Pierce Brosnan is my least favorite Bond. Find out why in the latest Battle of the Bonds.

Part 006 // Daniel Craig out now!

I grew up with Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan. I came of age with Daniel Craig.
🍸
Only time will tell how Daniel Craig’s legacy as James Bond will evolve as we get further and further from his run, but no matter how fondly or cruelly the passage of time looks back on Craig, the impact he’s had on my life will forever remain the same.
🍸
Daniel Craig wasn’t my first Bond and he won’t be my last, but he will always be my Bond.

Hello Blake, I don't know if you're aware or not but this is the official forum for the "Deplorable Dummies" at danielcraigisnotbond and I guess that makes me, as the lead writer, the "Dimwitted Detractor" in chief . If you did realize this then I commend you on your chutzpa and long term troll. If not don't worry, personally I'm not offended, we're used to it. The reason this site still exists is due to the fact every "official" fan site drives away anyone not totally smitten with every breath Mr. Craig takes, we give those like minded folks an outlet since we aren't trying to cozy up to the production studio. I imagine this will change once he is no longer the reining Bond. I respect your opinion and would never begrudge you of it as others, apparently including you based on your comments, would begrudge ours.

All that said, I see you put a great deal of work into your project and enjoyed reading it despite the fact I disagreed with probably 90% of what you had to say, diversity of thought is what makes the world so rich! I wish you all the best and hope you continue with your writing and love of all things Bond.

Ha! While I admire the assumption that the digs were chutzpa-powered with a long-term troll in mind, I truthfully had no idea. I hope you didn't take too much offense, and I really respect you taking the time to leave a thoughtful response instead of calling me out for the name-calling. Which maybe I deserve. It's all in good fun, I assure you. Roger Moore is my favorite Bond (despite my declaration of Bond being the best), so I'm more than familiar with proudly owning an opinion some, or most, disagree with.

Diversity of thought not only makes the world rich, but it also makes this franchise all the more interesting and impactful. No two Bond fans are alike, and that's what keeps me so engaged with the community at large, even if I'm only engaging this deeply online through the sharing of this series. I really appreciate you taking the time to read, sharing your honest thoughts, and providing kind encouragement. In many ways, your response has meant more to me, as someone not a fan of Craig's, than it would have coming from someone who agreed completely. The fact that you stuck around and read the whole thing given your position really means a lot.

No matter our preferences, we're still just two Bond fans, aren't we? <3

Although I don’t enjoy Brosnan’s Bond, his time as the character helped usher James Bond into a new modern world, paving the way for his successor to expand the character, deepen his mythos, and send the franchise to soaring new heights.

His successor send himself to "soaring new heights", literally. Too bad we actually didn't see that, would've been at least less depressing to see him flying away as a GoldenEye 64 guard hitting a grenade

Image

The writing was on the wall... along with the rest of him!

Too bad you hated the homages in DAD, I can imagine you getting furious when you saw the Dr No dots in Time To Die or when you heard the song written for the love story between James Bond and Tracy Di Vicenzo, his ill-fated wife, from the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, in the end credits! God, what would you have done if DAD ended with Shirley Bassey's Diamonds Are Forever because, you know, there are diamonds!

Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts, but you've got me all wrong, my friend. I appreciate you pulling from Part 005 // Pierce Brosnan; I wish you would have included this bit as well:

"Die Another Day is my most rewatched Brosnan due in large part to this grand easter egg hunt. Spotting the cheeky callbacks and bringing out your inner Rick Dalton is the best part of this film, and it’s particularly rewarding for Bond mega dorks like me."

Exactly, that's the reason I allowed the post, while deleting a troll post yesterday that was just a drive-by "you all suck" message. I think there's a big difference between a well-argued defence of Craig and a simple yah-boo message.

I really appreciate your hospitality and willingness to discern my intentions from someone just coming here to spew hate. As I said in my opening piece kicking off this little writing adventure of mine:

"...if you’re looking for a blog bombastic enough to crown one singular actor as the definitive James Bond, you’ve come to the wrong place. That’s not what this is about. Boiling down the six variations of the James Bond film character in an effort to determine who did it better undermines the cultural significance of 007. The beauty of Bond is the evolution, is the variation in cinematic quality, is the fact that no one Bond is quite like the other."

My opinions on Craig are obviously not shared by most on this forum, but the fact that we can share in an honest discourse and voice our opinions and preferences is one of the most endearing and enduring foundations of this franchise. So, cheers to you all, and thanks again for reading. I can't wait to see where we go from here.

No worries Blake, your right we are all Bond fans and I hope you stick around, we could use a little push back from time to time. I will tell you though after 15 years of being treated as pariahs and our opinions looked at as something akin to science denial the vitriol can get a little thick so fair warning.

I'm sorry if you felt personally offended, avl_bmb. My intention was never to "spew hate". It was just a light, innocent joke at your Bond in the same way you called my Bond a "ridiculous actor", a "milquetoast", bits of my favourite film's soundtrack "a shitty porn song". When those words are applied at things people are devoted to, they can come as a bit hurtful and I think we all have the right to defend the things we love in a democratic forum.

I was just using my fair share of democracy we all have in this Classic Bond community - and the James Bond community in general, which is always tolerant to different opinions just like when they throw a gif of the CGI-wave surfing scene as soon as you say DAD (for all the mistakes it had, which I have admitted) that this is the prime example of a post-9/11 Bond and encapsulates the 2001-2002 atmosphere quite well.

Just to get this straight, I'm very recent in this forum. Time To Die brought me here. And my disdain for Craig is more related to his input in the franchise than his acting itself. You'll find me praising Casino Royale and SPECTRE even in well-known Bond sites. One of my TTD reviews begins with "I never condoned what CraigNotBond did", in fact. He would have been a relatively likeable Bond to me and I wouldn't be here had he didn't kill the character. I'm afraid that bit has even contaminated my enjoyment of his previous films, knowing that this Bond I even got to like was not going to be "the one we all love and knew" (as promised in the many 2006 interviews) but a sheep heading to his slaughter. Still, I have fond personal memories of his films itself, particularly SPECTRE and Casino Royale. The Craig era does mean a lot in my life, speaking truthfully and honestly. Much as it happens to you with Brosnan -that you say "it's the Bond you grew up with but now it's your least liked"- the same happens to me with Craig. I have a SPECTRE mini-poster hanging on my wall, to remind me of the day I watched that movie and the person I was when I watched it. Like the Kingsman room with all the newspapers of the days Harry saved Queen and Country. I still keep my Eva Green autograph and my love towards her as an actress -and as a woman- is as big as my love for Pierce Brosnan as an actor, as a person and as my childhood Bond.

Thank you so much for the democracy, dirtybenny.
Hope you'll enjoy your stay in this forum, avl_bmb.

Not offended in the slightest, ns_writings. And just to clarify, because I know messages can get crossed quite easily on message boards and text communications, that reference to spewing hate was in no way directed toward you. That was more in reference to the trolls lobbing their "you all suck" messages that Kristatos mentioned. The more we all get into discussions like this, the more I like this place. It's our mutual passion that brings out our distinct, personal experiences with that passion, and I think that's quite a beautiful thing. I'm here to stay.

I'm glad you feel that way. Contrary to what many say about this site, I find the community here to be fairly friendly and open-minded. We are not always in agreement even when it comes to the classic Bond films, but we still have constructive discussions without things getting too out of control like on some of the other Bond forums.

It's great to see another fan of Roger Moore here as he is also my favourite Bond.

Battle of the Bonds // Part 007 // Mission Report

We’ve come quite a long way since starting this journey together, haven’t we?
:cocktail:
You’ve been so kind in allowing me to inundate you with my countless thoughts, opinions, and musings on this franchise, its actors, and its films. For that I thank you.
:cocktail:
With the final entry in my Battle of the Bonds series, I leave you with rankings, reflections, and closing thoughts on the future of James Bond. :007:

You wrote:'At the time of this writing, actor Regé-Jean Page stands as the odds-on favorite to win the lauded role of the world’s 007th Bond. Call me full of s**t if you like, but he’s been my preferred choice since his name first entered the rumor mill. He has the look, he has the dramatic ability, and, as a man of British-Zimbabwean descent, he has the diversity this franchise so desperately needs. If the next Bond is just another white man, no matter how beloved or dramatically talented that white man might be, I think EON Productions will have missed an opportunity to push the franchise forward and continue the evolution of Bond.'-----------He does NOT come close to the look of Bond. Are you redefining a literary iconic character to be woke with the times? Sorry :!: That is NOT how this works. Diversity has nothing to do with the selection of the next Bond actor. Why not an Asian instead? If the next Bond actor is not Caucasian they can throw this franchise into the trash pile of celluloid waste material. This ridiculous notion of ethnically cleansing Bond to appeal to a lunatic notion of inclusion would result in a non-Fleming interpretation of the character. Darwin's theories have nothing to do with the ethnicity of the next Bond actor.

Weeeell...in some ways, I think he'd be an improvement on Craig, in that he is at least suave and handsome. But Veronica raises a good point about his ancestry. Bond's family tree is spelled out in some detail in the books, and in supplemental material, such as John Pearson's authorised biography of Bond. Aidan Turner remains my first choice for the next Bond, and Henry Cavill my second.
