Thank you Jason, but I am just a very small cog in the machine as they say. I can't imagine why the "Bond gets put in his place" marketing campaign didn't pull the audience into the theaters! The funny thing is the film doesn't bear out that message as much as the trailers would suggest, of course the biggest faux pas is killing Bond, apparently at Craig's behest, his condition on returning. Babz broke the number one rule her father made, no actor is bigger than Bond. If Connery wasn't bigger, how the hell do you get delusional enough to think Craig is?!

I think it takes incredible hutzpah to kill Fleming's creation and her father's legacy. I dislike big tech and corporate America but maybe Amazon puts the brakes on Barbara and puts someone into oversee the charcter. Star Wars has Jon Favreau who is battling with Kennedy for the legacy and direction of Bond. Let' hope soemone emerges like that. Doubt it will happen. DB and all, don't you like the excuses for the box office from MI 6 (the pravda of the Bond universe)?!

Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant

Post by Omega »

I posted ticket numbers in the bo thread
But in the us NTTD sold fewer tickets than Casino Royale which was a bad opening weekend for bond, the cartoon the original DCinB site backed as a boycott beat Craig keeping him from number one that weekend.

Obviously this poor bo for no time to die is a verdict from American audiences on their fellow Americans (Broccoli family’s) stewardship of the bond franchise.

opening weekend ticket sales based on average ticket price
Die Another Day 8,101,900
Casino Royale 6,234,069
Quantum of Solace 9,405,136
Skyfall 11,101,094
Spectre 8,351,500
No Time To Die 6,093,579 - based on current projections

I don't trust Amazon to do it better than EON, but considering what they've given us the past decade and a half, Amazon can't do much worse! The thing is will Amazon find a "Favreau" of the Bond universe or would it be Babz 2.0? Of course EON won't go down easy, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Yeah, MI6 have been running interference for EON for quite some time, this is more of the same, surely it's covid that's keeping everyone away from the theaters, not terrible stories featuring the suicide of their favorite character, no it's something more nefarious!

After what felt like an eternity, it was only until recently that I was reminded of Craig's new so-called Bond film when I saw some reviews online. Since I don't plan on giving a cent of my money to see the film, I went ahead and read the spoilers on the forums. My reaction to the ultimate spoiler of Bond being killed can pretty much be summed up by this Roger Moore gif:

Image

Don't get me wrong, I'm upset that the filmmakers went ahead with this stupid decision, but I just don't feel really angry about it. Perhaps it's because I've already got out my fan rage back in 2008 with Quantum of Solace, since that was the film that confirmed my fears about where the series was headed. Honestly, I'm too tired of this series to get really angry at this point.

The only videos I've seen so far of No Time To Die is the gun barrel and the title sequence. Once again, Craig couldn't properly perform the gun barrel opening for his life, and the title sequence at one point has an image of a big hourglass that got me thinking of the intro to Days of Our Lives. When someone eventually posts the film online, and I'm feeing masochistic enough  , I'll fully watch the underwhelming conclusion to Craig's Bond soap opera.

When everything finally settles down, I hope people will at last see how poorly planned and half-a$$ed Craig's espionage soap opera really is. Here is another good review of No Time To Die where the reviewer also refers to Craig's Bond era as a soap opera.

DB in the us and Canada this poor performance is something else entirely, it’s not covid and it’s not necessarily word of mouth, imho it’s fatigue with Craigs character and that variant of bond.
The industry truly expected great things this weekend from that franchise, when they didn’t get it they quickly went with positive spin stores because it’s because it’s part of the narrative that the box office is back. They can still make an argument for the improvement of the bo marketplace, but I think they have to recognize are good and bad movies in the audience respond accordingly. The audience may be actually responding to Spectre

Mi6 has always been a mouth piece for the eon production company, I never understood the fan base that thought it was their duty to be loyal to a company in an industry that any reasonable person understands works they other way around, studios and production companies have to be loyal to fans not the fans loyal to them. When it doesn’t work this way it end badly. Kathleen Kennedy for instance was at war with traditional Star Wars fan base and produced accordingly, until the mandalorian and the rise of Favreau Disney had a mess on their hands. Still do, a lot of fans hope Disney will write off the ray trilogy and build the universe from 5 years after Jedi.

But far as Amazon owning half danjaq and thunderball and casino Royale they are set up have influence over the coming movies. Babs contract gives her rights over movies if Amazon goes towards something else or bond naturally evolves in a different production method those contract written in the 1970s when saltzman sold to UA don’t hold up in the new digital age.

Waiting in the wings is mgw sons, back in 2010-1 when mgm was going bankrupt they floated the idea of a new bond and new direction away from QOS. Possibly they might have a say now Babs rampage is hopefully over and try to bring back a bond cubby would recognize. If Babs is die hard she is in charge and wants to continue the way Craig era was it’s never going to end. If Amazon wants the bond version of the avengers it could get worse.
I don’t know who they turn to run the franchise if eon proves incompetent, P&W the writing team fired by Craig then rehired, that duo hasn’t had an original idea in decades.
Who out there gets bond and can recreate the excitement of the early films? Christopher Nolan? He’s got the pedigree but he also has all kinds of other baggage and then there is his normal technique, which I don’t think bond fans will like in their movies.

Matthew Vaughn? I like his first class and kingsman movies he gets what made the bond movies fun, and he took swipes at the Craig series,
but can he actually make good bond movies?

I don’t know if mgw’s kids are the answer. Mgw always gave great speeches and talked about what made bond work, until he got behind the reboot then everything he said in specials and behind the scenes dvd were to be forgotten.

I honestly don’t think it can get much worse then I look at without remorse and other Amazon productions and realize it can.

Saint! Welcome back old boy! Yes, this has indeed been a long time coming, I know exactly how you feel, Bond has been missing in action for many years, this film is just his bloated corpse washing up onshore and confirming what we all already knew. Save your money old friend and just read my series of rants, you'll find out all you need to know about this dumpster fire. I put a little wink to you in part 1, referencing SPECTRE. I hope you're doing well and don't be a stranger.

Everything you say here is spot on (I had to cut it for brevities sake, you understand). I can't really add anything, but to say you've captured it perfectly!

As far as box office specifically, the problem is all these things and more, we see others finally emerging from the woodwork denouncing his holiness now that he's gone, saying what we've said for years only pretending it's original, the fact of the matter is Craig was at best a 3 film Bond, after Spyfoul he wore out his welcome and killing off Bond with a disinterested performance didn't win back any supporters, add in covid, poor word of mouth, the kitchen sink or whatever else and you've got the answer.

Simon Templar has returned home after 21 months :!: Saint, all you have to do is force yourself to stay awake and watch the title song being sung by Billie Eye-lash, as it sets the tone for a disturbing and depressing 2 hours and 43 minutes of boring 'emotionality' surrounded by car chases and explosions. Broccoli has to choose a new Bond now with the approval of Amazon, which will cause her great strife, since she most likely still wants Cr-egg back, as sick as that seems, but alas, he is definitely done now :!:

Thanks Benny and BJ! I'll have to try to visit here a little more often and catch up on all of the rants I missed, as well as posting some nice classic Bond artwork to provide a little cheer for the unfortunate person at EON who's assigned to read this site.

I just read through the first part of your No Time To Die rant, Benny, and thanks for the little reference you added. A parody of the Craig Bond era done in a similar fashion to Carol Burnett's As The Stomach Turns skits really needs to be made. I also saw a commenter in the rant point out how No Time To Die and the 1967 Casino Royale shared similarities, which is funny because I was also thinking the same thing, especially in regards to everyone dying at the end. I look forward to reading your future rants on the film, Benny.

BJ also reminded me of title song, which I completely forgot to mention in my last post. Perhaps it's because I would rather forget it.

Now that the filmmakers have opened the door for another reboot, who knows what direction this series will take. But at least the Craig Bond soap opera literally concludes with him and this entire mess going up in flames, so I suppose I can drink to that.

It's a great segment as always. But I had no idea what you were talking about about regarding the plot. I had to browse Wikipedia. It says Madeline is Mr White's daughter - the Mr White who was in Casino Royale? Lyutsifer (?)Safin (is that the one in the mask?) is the assassin. Then Craig is visiting Vesper's tomb (?) and Spectre try and blow him up? I need a cup of hot sweet tea and a lay down in the dark to make sense of that cobblers.

Edit- welcome back too Saint - at the implosion of the Craig saga.
