In an interview before his death Peter Hunt (?) said they (EON) watch OHMSS before they star each new film and wonder why they can not come close to It (OHMSS) again.

They could / cannot come close because they don't care about the Bond character either in the books or the 'classic' films where Bond is one of a kind in the action genre. Now, of course, Bond is just your usual action guy that can appear in the Expendables 5 with Willis, Arnold, Jean-Claude, Jason, Stallone etc.... and most of those guys have more charm than the present, er, 'Bond.' OHMSS showcases Bond's character ... the novel and the film are fairly in sync. Bond has a sense of humor about himself. He most definitely is not just one dimensional killing machine. He plays chemin de fer and not poker (granted, if Hunt did have Bond play poker, it would have much more 007ish atmosphere). The Griffin Orr scenes (book) is Fleming at his slapsticking best... too bad this wasn't in the film: "Bond of Bond Street, hm hm hm?" They can't come close because you need a screenwriter who understands where Bond comes from to know where he should go.... Ditto for the director, etc. The team, including the main actor, have to have a respect for Bond, and not just a paycheck. Peter Hunt was all these things. He took a rough actor and made a film that the present Eon will decipher only when a Bondian genius shows up, and they're willing to give him / her the reins.

Craig will probably get married in one of next 18 bond films and his wife will get killed by the villain. So we will have OHMSS under a different name. But no one will care as no one watches the pre-Craig era Bonds as they are awful according tho the critics.
