Which actors should have been Bond?

Post by carl stromberg »

Of the actors who missed out on the role, which one would you have liked to have played Bond?

Burt Reynolds?

No thanks, he was American. An American cannot be Bond under any circumstances.

A couple of years ago I thought Billy Zane would have made a good Bond; this after seeing him as the Phantom and the baddie in the Titanic (the latter he wore evening clothes). Looked sort of like a younger Connery. Although American, at that time he had the look. Don't know much about his other films, though. I understand he is bald, so he could also play Blofeld 8)

In the Phantom he also does the physical stuff well.

Of the serious contenders, I thought Purefoy, James Purefoy was the best. I always thought Russell Crowe would have made a good Bond, but he is probably too famous, and was unpopular with the fans for the same reason Craig was initially (too coarse, lacks sophistication etc.). That may be true in his personal life, but I've no doubt he could act the part - he has even played a Royal Navy commander before (Master and Commander)

What about Britain's premier action man of yesteryear Lewis Collins? He must have been up for the role at some point.

He was considered apparently and in my opinion would've made a very good Bond, but for some reason the late Cubby Broccoli didn't take a shine to him and that was the end of that.
Pity I really think he would've been great as Bond in the mid to late eighties. Even early nineties. But as with George Lazenbys second it's one of those 'what if' situations.

Michael Billington should have had a go. He waited long enough.

:?: When I saw the opening scene of 'Schindlers List', I couldn't help but ponder whether or not Liam Neeson could play Bond. He was suave, cunning, physically imposing. But I somehow doubt he would have been interested what with his love of theater and commitment to character roles and controversial films regardless of box-office potential, ie. 'Kinsey.' He likely would have balked at signing a three picture deal and the lengthy shooting schedules.

I suppose Reynolds looked a bit like Connery in the early 70's. He had given a powerful performance in 'Deliverance' & was tipped for big things. His 'Smokey & the Bandit' movies showed he could do humour. However he is American. As for CR getting Bafta's. That was just a sympathy vote after Craig had been given such a hard time. Only one Bafta was given for 'Best Sound', whatever that means. It's made money, but what Bond movie has'nt ? No Craig & CR has completly split the audience. You either like or hate it. A Bond movie & actor should be universally liked by everyone.

Actually, Reynolds always looked so much like Brando that Brando haunted his career. (This doubtless kept him out of 'Godfather' or so he is supposed to have claimed.)
If not Reynolds as Bond, what about Brando? Just imagine his Fletcher Christian (south Kensington?) accent

So think of those four films starring Pierce Brosnan.
