Bond is Bourne

Post by Skywalker »

One of my work colleagues criticised my views on DC and CR. He stated that it was the best Bond film he had ever seen. Interested to know how he came to this baffling conclusion, I quizzed him on his bizarre viewpoint. His reply epitomised anything I could comprehend as his retort. He concluded that CR was nothing like any of the previous Bond films (I agreed) and that it was more akin with his other favourite films 'The Bourne series'.

I appreciate this is not the case for many Bond fans, but I thought it was quite fitting.

It has been suggested that CR is a Bond film for people who don't like James Bond films. I think there is something in that argument.

a guy I work with said that everyone who has told him positive things about Casino Royale also said that they didn't usually like James Bond movies. he also said he hasn't seen it yet, because of that fact.

Yet strange that all the die-hard Fleming fans on Bond forum sites the world over think Craig is the one of the best Bonds yet, and CR is one of the best films of the entire series....... :?

It is no coincidence that the lead character all 3 current spy film genres,Bond/Bauer/Bourne, all have the same initials, JB. What is so special about these 2 letters?

Craig is Bourne reborn a Brit. A clear copycat from the style of the movie and at one point trying to hire a Bourne writer for Bond 22.
Bourne is interesting for what he is a American superagent. His espionage never goes much deeper than his own past.
Craig could end up remembered as the Bourne Bond when all of the dust settles and the next actor is hired. Especially if the next movie after Craig returns to the suave Bond.

When did the Bond of Casino Royale suffer amnesia?
He didn't. The comparissons of Bond to Bourne are un-founded I find. I see no link or similarities between either of them, other than they're spies.

Can someone actually write down a list of similarities between Bond and Bourne? I haven't seen anyone give a reason why they are similar, it's always just "They turned Bond in to Bourne"

If that's all you say, here is what I say. Craig's Bond has more personality and humor. Hell, even Dalton's Bond has more personality and humor than Bourne. Bourne is just some emo who never seems to show any other emotion than brooding about his past.

Craig's Bond appears to be brooding about the present.

When Vesper died? Yeah, who would't? At least he seemed to have gotten past that in the end after showing confidence when he introduced himself to Mr. White (a part of Bond I look forward to in Bond 22). Of course it's natural we all move on from a personal tragedy. Mr Bourne, however doesn't seem to take a hint, even when he is at his most relaxed. Or perhaps he's just more paranoid than Bond.

Besides the initials, anyone care to explain the similarities in their personalities?

From my own perspective. I feel they both look moody and like you pointed out, they share a brooding outlook. They both appear on edge and not fully confident of their own ability. The scene at the end with Mr White countered a lot of these issues, but were talking about 2 mins in a painfully long movie.

With that two minutes showing what direction the films are heading. I think he showed confidence in the film but with arrogance added such as when he is in M's apartment and he doesn't seem to be intimidated until she straightens him up "If I hear one more syllable out of you I'll have you killed". When he's in the train with Vesper he's got that tongue and cheek thing going; serious but not too serious.

That's the biggest difference I see between Bond and Bourne. Bond has maintains his sense of humor at times while Bourne is too paranoid to be joking about anything when everyone is after him.

But like I said, he had that arrogant confidence that I found amusing, yet I like what I saw at the end even better with him all dressed up and deadly. It'll be interesting to see Craig grow in the role as the years go by.

I just wish they had done the film in the style of the ending. A more refined Bond that was more in tune with Craig's age. Not the raw, blunt instrument that I found hard to accept. The annoying thing for me is that the PTS had elements of the refinement we saw at the end.

That's too bad, hope you'll find Bond more appealing in 22 with his refinement and origin story already wrapped in CR.

I hope so too. Without the blunt instrument rookie style, he could be good. Not my personal favourite, but non the less 'good'.
