Am I the only person here...

Post by Kristatos »

... who can say both of these statements honestly?

1) I didn't care for Daniel Craig as James Bond

2) I recognise that I am in the minority on this

Sometimes it seems to me like everyone else on this forum is either a pro-Craig troll or believes that any minute now, EON is going to announce that they are sacking Craig and bringing back Roger Moore as Bond.

I don't care for Daniel Craig as James Bond. I'm not sure how you are defining "minority"' on the forums. On this forum? Amongst the "general public"?

I'm not sure what you mean about "bringing back Roger Moore as Bond".

Unfortunately as much as I would love EON to dump Rambo, I'm afraid he's here for the forseeable future (2 more films atleast). In terms of minority. I would say in terms of Bond fans worldwide your in the minority, but on this site NO.

The latter one.

OK, the Roger Moore bit was tongue-in-cheek, but there seem to be people on this forum who are convinced that Craig has been a monumental failure as Bond and that he won't return for Bond 23 or even Bond 22. Is it not possible to criticise Craig without denying reality in the process?

The reason I joined this forum is because the consensus among most Bond fans is so overwhelmingly pro-Craig that I started to question my own sanity for having a different opinion. Without wishing to name names, I have to say that some of the comments posted here don't exactly help matters.

I've no problem with you naming names.

I have no problem with DC as an actor or as 'Bond'. My main gripe is with CR and the reboot concept. Unfortunately DC failed to deliver a Bond performance in CR and with the prospect of continuity in the next two, I am concerned that the Bond of the previous 20 films will be forgotten. DC has the potential and ability to be a superb Bond. I realise some people have issues with his looks and build etc....but it does not irritate me as much, although I understand my friends concern regarding this.

His performance in CR was worthy of the acting plaudits he attained, but this is Bond not a production of Macbeth.

Unlike Craig's chav "Bond", I'm far too much of a gentleman

You have just expressed my thoughts better than me! The only difference is that I did have a hard time getting past the fact that Craig looks so different to any previous Bond. I think I may have found it easier to accept him if CR had been a non-EON Bond film; set in the 50's, even more faithful to the book and without anything to connect it to other Bond films. As things stood, it fell between two stools. It wanted to break with the Brosnan era, but it had a David Arnold score, a Danny Kleinmann title sequence, Judi Dench as M etc. It really "pulled me out of the picture", as they say in Hollywood, and made it hard to totally immerse myself in the reality of this film, instead of constantly comparing it to other movies.

I sort of know what you mean in your first two points. I don't like Daniel Craig as Bond for more or less the same reasons as you. I never got over the way he looks either (and found his Bond a bit dour and unlikeable) and if Brosnan, Cleese and Moneypenny were casualties of a Bond 'reset' then surely there was a strong case for Arnold, Purvis and Wade and Judi Dench to go too. They've done good business with the film and Craig is in all likelyhood going to do a trilogy with some sort of continuation story. Of course most people went to see the film and most people still posting on the Bond sites are supportive. What else would you expect? I can remember people like Dr Shatterhand and that Cbn mod Asterix telling us that Craig wouldn't be cast because he doesn't look the part. As soon as he was cast they changed their view. About turn! Craig is suddenly the greatest thing since the invention of the toaster.

IMO Daniel Craig's casting caused more of a rumpus than a Jackman or Butler etc would have and he has been unquantifiably divisive. Would we be posting here on a site called OwennotBond.com? I don't think so.

I don't quite understand the Roger Moore thing.

Me too, but we aren't completely alone. At least we can express our views with freedom on this forum.

i can agree that casino royale was a hit, and fairly well recieved, but i know a great deal of people who didn't bother to see the film simply because they thought craig looked inappropriate in the role.
i went to see every Bond film on opening weekend since "A View to A Kill", and yet I didn't bother to see Casino Royale until it had been out for almost 2 months, after I was given an enthusiastic review from a fairly intelligent source. but it was something i went to see very skeptically, after being told by this source that Casino Royale was better than the Connery films.
after i saw it, i was positive that this person was very wrong.
So I will agree that the film was a hit at the box office, but i believe it was a very mixed bag for the majority of people who went to see it. the critics may have been overwhelmingly positive, but they also give great reviews to films with meryl streep that i will probably never bother to watch.

Paco is right in that you can't suggest that every person who went to see Casino Royale loved it. Yes, Casino Royale was a Box Office hit.
