Re: POLL: Did Pierce Brosnan suck as 007?
No. But he could have been 'way better: Goldeneye was a great debut, with the major flaw of the score. If the following films had built on that, he would've acquired more confidence. But it does seem as if the Pierce is holding himself back in someway, (lack of confidence) and not really letting him...

Re: Spaghetti Western Fanatics Anyone?
Why, a bit late, but yesh, I did see Death Rides a Horse great, great fun, with the 'Colonel' in top form as bad/good guy, along with a great spaghetti score! Also, Captain Apache another classic, if just for the scene with Van Cleef holding his stomach in, posing with muscles flexed.

Craig should play 002 or something, then it would be OK if he's a Bourne-again action hero.

Re: POLL: Dalton closest to Fleming's Bond?
Most agreeable ("He disagreed with something that ate him"). In the books I imagine Bond 'blended in' by being a handsome, dashing fellow ... driving his Bentley helter skelter, passing beautiful girls with pink scarves, a hint of Guerlains, in a white Lancia Flaminia Zagato Spyder. He nearly blows ...

Pussy returns in a very credible role; I've commented elsewhere on Trigger Mortis ... very good thriller.

If Bond can be played by Craigster, then the field is open ... double: _./// I don't think Bruce Lee should be portrayed by a six-six Swede ... of course Lee was a real person, but just speaking of him as a cultural icon like Bond. Should SHAFT be played by an Eskimo? I agree with Kotto, that 003 or...

Strange Astronaut Deaths
Just reading about old post on RIP Neil Armstrong. A few days ago I discovered that within a period of three years around a dozen Apollo astronauts (I think at least one non-astronaut but associated with the space program) died violent, mysterious deaths: car crashes, suicide, explosions. Some theor...

Re: How did EON films distort the image of the literary Bond
I don't think him recognizing brandies and caviar is a part of his "high class" education. I think that's a part of his character of who he is. I think that's just amusing. Bond knowing on what temperature sake should be prepared... I feel the know-it-all Bond was Moore's Bond and I think he pulled...

Re: Was Bond a rebel?
He was a mild rebel, if there is such a thing. He hated tea, deemed it 'mud.' He customized his Bentley to the grief of his mechanic. OHMSS was a send-up of the British royal/commoner system; he was even somewhat uncomfortable with his CMG, and OHMSS (novel) features Bond's hilarious nightmare on th...

Re: POLL: Dalton closest to Fleming's Bond?
Dalton in looks was close to Fleming's Bond; my main problem with him is that his Bond had little charisma, the bigger than life quality that Bond should have. In other films Dalton has displayed more. And the first Bond girl he meets, the one on the yacht, did not fit the spectacular vision of the ...

Re: POLL: Dr No perfect first Bond film?
Interesting question. 1/ Great, enigmatic title. A filmgoer who didn't know Bond would say, hm, that's a catchy title 2/ credits sequence with dizzying balls (bezants?) coupled with tremendous music 3/ the great John Barry music of course a critical ingredient 4/ the opening shot of Bond and the MUS...

Re: Trigger Mortis
Just read TM, quite engaging and read it in two days, well into the (good)night. I have no major bones to pick, a very credible job. The story is set just after Bond's mission with Goldfinger. It has many, many Fleming touches, such as: Bondian chapter titles; the punctuation/spelling was British, a...

Re: Dirty Benny's Weekly Rant
The worlds of the novels and the films are of course very different. But the underlying glue is the character of Bond. While his screen side was much more bigger than life, we still retain the basic character of the Bond of the books as a straightforward man, with only a few books in his bookshelf (...

Re: Christopher Lee is dead
Truly, there will never be another. When he played bad guys it always seemed he was a nice guy inside. I suppose part of the reason is the slight 'wink wink' he was such a master at. As he said, he portrayed Scaramanga as sort of the dark side of Bond. Note that his Scaramanga had a dark, sardonic B...

In OHMSS (novel) Bond doesn't much care for titles and such; 'snobbery is the hairy heel of Achilles' ... lots of fun with his visit with Griffin Or (btw, referencing Harry Potter again, the main professor is named Griffindore, which means 'golden griffin' which is traditionally a symbol for Christ ...

Well Commander, Craig's excuse is; Is instead of BOND being hypnotized in his version it is the AUDIENCE who are under an evil spell! On a semi-serious note, I've just read an interesting study on the Harry Potter phenom by literature professor John Gardner. I haven't read the books, but after Gard...

Re: Thunderball vs YOLT
I tend to suspect Fleming wanted to tell the WW2 story, but was too close to the bone and had to re-write most of the story to conceal the truth of WW2. activities. Interesting. Was that information classified, even after WW2? I suspect it was more the case that he was inspired by the story, but ch...

Re: Thunderball vs YOLT
Difficult to say. The cons of TB is that it moves too slowly and takes forever to get to where it's going, and I can't stand that drippy Domino whose BIG Moment of spearing Largo in the back is somehow meant to *atone* for her overall useless, clueless, helpless, accident-prone idiocy (it doesn't)....
